Taoiseach Raises Cork-Boston Flights with President Obama



“Today’s confirmation by President Obama that there is no political opposition to approving the new Cork-Boston route operated by Norwegian Air International is encouraging for Cork Chamber members, Cork Airport, and the business and tourism community in the wider region”, Conor Healy reflected.


Along with Niall McCarthy, Managing Director of Cork Airport, Mr. Healy is currently visiting Boston and Washington DC meeting with political, business, and Irish community leaders in an effort to escalate the approval process.


Highlighting the importance of direct air services from Cork Airport to the US, Mr. Healy said: “The US is a key export market for Irish businesses. Having direct access to transatlantic services would benefit business connectivity between the US and Cork substantially as well as provide new opportunities for tourism growth”.

Mr. Healy and a delegation from Cork also visited Chicago last week to participate in a series of cultural and business events and meetings, which addressed food, tourism, and IT opportunities for the Cork region.

Cork Chamber is proud to announce Seamus Fives, Site Leader at Pfizer as the guest speaker for the April Business Breakfast in association with Irish Examiner.


Seamus became the Pfizer Site leader for both the Ringaskiddy & Little Island sites in January 2011, after a career which included roles as Finance Director for Ireland/Singapore, Operations Lead roles for the Cork Sites and Network Strategy Team Leader. Seamus has worked his entire professional career in manufacturing and is currently Chair of BioPharmachemical Ireland.


Seamus was Site Leader in 2015, when Pfizer reversed a plan to close the plant in Little Island, saving 160 jobs. He has been involved with the Site since 1999 and Site Leader since 2008 so this was a particularly positive announcement for Seamus. He stated that this turnaround “is an example of how continuing to focus on competiveness and adding business value generates business opportunities”


This is a unique opportunity to hear from one of the largest pharmaceuticals firms in the world.

Cork Chamber in association with Network Cork is hosting an executive lunch on Friday 22nd April at the Ambassador Hotel, focussing on Women in Leadership and featuring special guest speaker Deirdre Somers, Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE).


Deirdre, a Cork native, was appointed Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE) in June 2007. During her tenure the ISE modernised its structure, expanded its services domestically and internationally, rising to #1 stock exchange globally in fixed income and funds listings. The ISE was awarded Best Place to Work in Ireland (medium sized companies) just last month. She is currently President of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges. Deirdre is outspoken about the importance of the role of markets as a relevant and accessible funding source for companies, particularly for high potential SMEs and is looking forward to sharing her views with the people of Cork.

€600,000 Funding Programme for Social Entrepreneurs

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland (SEI) has launched its 2016 funding programme and is currently looking for submissions from entrepreneur-led projects that address a social challenge in a new or better way.  The deadline for submissions is Thursday 7th April.
