SPOTLIGHT ON: BREXIT
Following the recent BREXIT referendum there have already been some significant fluctuations in international markets and exchange rates, and in the short-term Irish SMEs are being advised to speak to their financial advisors about how they can manage their financial risks and exposure during this period of uncertainty. However, it is still not clear as to what the long-term effects will be on Irish businesses, and it may be the case that this turn of events actually presents opportunities for Ireland. Over the coming months, Cork Chamber will keep you updated on the ongoing commentary, highlighting a selection of news articles related to BREXIT each week, as well as flagging resources and events have been created to support businesses that may be affected by the UK’s new position. Furthermore, our Enterprise Europe Network team are available to discuss the international connections they can make in new markets on behalf of your business.
Please let us know if you have any content for the BREXIT UPDATE section that you feel would be valuable to fellow members.
Contact Katherine or Eimear for more information about Enterprise Europe Network services.

Cork Chamber Launches Housing Report Calling for More Rental Accommodation
|
Cork Chamber has published a report highlighting the business need for more long-term, large-scale and affordable rental accommodation in our city centres. The availability of residential accommodation has been a key policy focus of Cork Chamber in the past year. Feedback from the business community in Cork shows that 90% of large businesses see the shortage of suitable private rental properties as the biggest issue for their business. Another 60% of businesses foresee the availability of accommodation for their talent as an issue for future expansions. Ireland is competing against the best performing countries in the OECD for inward investment and top talent. We can no longer afford to ignore the need to meet the demand of our skilled and mobile work force for centrally located yet affordable rental properties. Neither can we afford to see further upward rent spirals, which creates wage pressures, adds more strain to our social housing sector and prevents prospective home owners from saving for a deposit. In our report, Cork Chamber calls on Government to formally recognise the rental market as a permanent and essential feature of our housing sector. To read our report and our recommendations to Government as part of the forthcoming Housing Action Plan, click here.

Housing Action Plan Stakeholder Workshop
Cork Chamber recently represented business interests as it attended the first Housing Action Plan Stakeholder Consultation Workshop organised by the Department of the Environment, Local Government and Community and held in City Hall. The workshop brought together stakeholders from public and private sectors and focused on ideas to improve the viability of new construction, stimulating more rental accommodation, tackling homelessness issues, and encouraging more private landlords to enter the market. The outcome of the consultation will become clear in Government’s Housing Action Plan, which is due to be published later this month.
