On Friday 16th October, our colleague Barbara-Anne will be leaving the comfort of her home to represent Cork Chamber and sleep out in Cork City Gaol to "Shine a Light" on homelessness in Ireland.
Every night that we are tucked up in bed there are thousands sleeping in doorways, battling Ireland’s weather and whatever other conditions are thrown their way. We are sure that you have also noticed the increased number of people on our streets, but it is shocking to realise that today there are over 5,000 people homeless in Ireland and that 1 in 4 is a child!
Commenting on her decision to participate, Barbara-Anne said ‘I feel very privileged to go home every evening to my family and my home but not everyone is as lucky, therefore I have signed up for ‘Shine a Light Night’ so I can play a small part in helping Focus Ireland provide vital prevention services which help change people’s lives. I appreciate there is a drain on everyone’s resources and there are many ‘asks’ of you, but I am hoping you can help in some small way to do your bit to prevent homelessness in Ireland. To sponsor me, visit here. If you cannot give financially then I simply ask that you spend some time on Friday night considering the plight of those less fortunate and give when the time is more appropriate.’

The ‘Cork Company of the Year’ awards are open to all businesses, across varying sectors and sizes, from the Emerging to SME’s to Large indigenous and multinational organisations. This year we are delighted to announce that our Special Award Category is 'Excellence in Customer Engagement' (Retail / Hospitality).
Cork Chamber today welcomes the release of this pro-business budget and in particular the reduction of the marginal rate of income tax below the threshold of 50% and efforts to bridge the gap between PAYE workers and self-employed over time. While these initiatives are to be highly commended, for momentum of the economic recovery to be sustained in the long term this effort must be further built upon in future budgets.
Assessing the overall impact of the Budget Mr. O’Connell stated, “This budget will create momentum in rewarding work, entrepreneurs and innovation, and we welcome the retention of the hugely successful 9 per cent VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector. We are disappointed that 90% of housing activity will be focused in the greater Dublin area as this does not recognise the housing shortages across all urban centres in the country with Cork city and suburbs suffering from an increasingly critical housing shortage”.
