Cork Chamber recognises momentum driven by Budget 2016

Cork Chamber today welcomes the release of this pro-business budget and in particular the reduction of the marginal rate of income tax below the threshold of 50% and efforts to bridge the gap between PAYE workers and self-employed over time. While these initiatives are to be highly commended, for momentum of the economic recovery to be sustained in the long term this effort must be further built upon in future budgets.

Assessing the overall impact of the Budget Mr. O’Connell stated, “This budget will create momentum in rewarding work, entrepreneurs and innovation, and we welcome the retention of the hugely successful 9 per cent VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector. We are disappointed that 90% of housing activity will be focused in the greater Dublin area as this does not recognise the housing shortages across all urban centres in the country with Cork city and suburbs suffering from an increasingly critical housing shortage”.

THEN

FROM BUILDING HOMES

In 2002 a big hearted Irishman stepped across a road that led to a poverty stricken township in the Cape of South Africa. The squalid living conditions Niall Mellon saw moved him deeply.

10 years later, with the collective help of more than 22,000 amazing volunteers, the local community and the S.A. Government we have managed to:

  • Build 25,000 homes
  • Transform the lives of 125,000 people
  • Mobilize 22,000 volunteers to participate in Building Blitz projects in the townships of South Africa
  • Fundraised and managed over £160m
  • Radically changed the South African housing policy

NOW

TO EDUCATING AFRICA

Our goal is to educate 100,000 impoverished African children.

In 2012, following an inspiring meeting with Nelson Mandela, Niall Mellon started planting bricks rather than laying them. He knew that by building schools, providing mentoring and teacher support, he would lay the seeds of growth and prosperity for the children of Africa. To date Mellon Educate has managed to:

  • Build and refurbish five schools
  • Train and mentor dozens of teachers
  • Help over 4,500 children
  • Raise pass rates from 20% to 75%

Entrepreneurs, like you, are leapfrogging competitors and disrupting established industries in adapting and innovating to solve customer’s problems. Sean McNulty, Dolmen, will demonstrate how to identify which ‘needs / problems’ are worth solving, then how to develop the right solutions that markets will see value in and will pay for! Our real life case studies will show you how this process works to inspire innovation.

The Idea Generation event will look at the Maritime sector and explore opportunities that Maritime could offer businesses/researchers willing to look at, and consider opportunities, outside the box.  However, it will also be general enough in nature for other businesses/researchers wishing to explore new innovations and opportunities.

This Ideagen is for entrepreneurs and researchers to get a better understanding of how new commercial business opportunities and support services and possible activities can be developed around the Maritime sector.

The second part of the event involves teams proactively brain storming with a set process applied to enable these teams to generate and outline value propositions, to explore how to solve/exploit a range of opportunities and challenges and to present and share results.

Agenda

This event will take place on board the LE Aisling in Cork City on Monday, 19th October 2015 at 9.00 am.

A briefing of the event on the day will take place upon embarking on the Bridge of the Ship.  This will be followed by a short case story from SEFtec Ltd (a world-class manufacturer of marine safety training simulators).  Participants will then descend below deck for a creativity session where teams will be brought through a structured “design and strategic thinking” process, culminating in presentations.  The event will conclude with a Q&A Session on “What Happens Next”, Financial Supports, Networks, and Outputs. The Event will conclude at 1 pm.

Ideagen is an ideal forum for:

Entrepreneurs and businesses

  • Giving ideas for new products, business models and businesses, together with links into the relevant research network and an opportunity to meet potential business partners.

Researchers

  • Who wish to test the commercial viability of their ideas.
  • With ideas, technology, or science who need a business partner to help them to commercialise it.
  • Who are looking for ideas for new research projects with strong commercial potential and links into the business network.
  • Opportunities to meet potential businesses and research partners.
