Cork's Call

In advance of the General Election, Cork Chamber hosted a debate during which Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Labour, Sinn Féin, The Green Party and the Anti-Austerity Alliance were challenged on key policy issues affecting the future ability of Cork businesses to grow and succeed, as outlined in Cork Chamber's Election Manifesto including:

  • Stimulating private residential housing,
  • Developing adequate flood defences and insurance protection,
  • Accelerating infrastructure investment,
  • Encouraging entrepreneurship through tax reforms,
  • Introducing social protection for self-employed people.

Responding to the Chamber’s call for progressing the  M20 Cork-Limerick motorway, five out of six parties agreed that this critical infrastructure piece should be prioritised, while five parties also committed to no tolling on the Jack Lynch Tunnel. Encouragingly, all parties supported the Chamber’s call to end tax discrimination of the self-employed, while all parties also expressed openness to introducing a Minister for Housing and Infrastructure.

Exporting to Egypt – Feedback wanted

Last year the Egyptian Customs Authority introduced obligations for companies exporting into Egypt to legalise trade documentation. We are aware that some exporters have encountered these requirements and are experiencing difficulties in exporting to Egypt. If you have encountered these new obligations we would be grateful if you could send Imelda on a brief note detailing your experiences (practical cases of burdens with registration procedures and the restrictiveness), and we will refer to our colleagues in Eurochambres, who will be raising the concerns and experiences of Irish exporters with the Market Access Team in DG Trade.
