Chamber Urges Council for Realism
Cork Chamber has called on both local authorities in Cork to demonstrate realism in the run-up to their 2015 Budget’s and ensure that there is no increase in rates at a minimum for 2015, maintain in full the commitment to ring-fencing 1% of rates income for the Economic Development Fund and to put in place a multi-annual strategy which will see the extra revenue being raised through the Local Property Tax leading to targeted reductions in commercial rates in the years ahead. A fundamental restructuring of the commercial rates system is necessary if we are to address the over reliance on the business community to fund local government in a meaningful way. Recent changes to the Local Property Tax rates and changes to the provision of central government funding cannot be allowed to have an adverse effect on commercial rates if businesses in the region are to remain sustainable.
