Election 2024 - Business Priorities to Shape Cork’s Future

Dear Chamber Member,

2024 has already been a year of significant political change, both at home in Ireland and abroad, with more still to come. Cork City and County, too, are in the midst of a considerable evolution, with a growing population that requires a renewed focus on infrastructure and housing delivery, on sustainable urban development, on talent availability and competitiveness.

With the city region’s population projected to grow by 50% in the years to 2040, Government needs to support Cork’s sustainable development in the years ahead with enabling policies and measures that make a real difference to people and businesses across the city and county.

Cork Chamber represents 1,200 members, together employing 130,000 people across the city, metropolitan region and county. Our priorities and concerns as we approach this election are shaped by our continuous engagement with members across the region, which equips us with a unique understanding of the most pressing concerns for our businesses and our communities.

With the 2024 General Election set to take place in a matter of weeks, Cork Chamber has published its 2024 General Election Manifesto, outlining the key priorities for progress identified by our members:

  1. Housing
  2. Urban Evolution
  3. Talent & Skills
  4. Renewables & Energy System Integration
  5. Sustainability & Climate Neutral City
  6. Infrastructure & Connectivity
  7. Supporting SMEs, Local Businesses & Start-Ups
  8. Planning Reform & Speed of Delivery

We must invest in our infrastructure, our housing, our public transport; we need to prioritise the pursuit of a sustainable, vibrant evolution in our urban centres; and we must enhance our competitiveness, attracting talent and investment, and supporting SMEs and local businesses.

Cork Chamber and our members are ambitious for Cork City and County, and the future development of the region. The 20 new TDs elected to Dáil Éireann to represent the people of Cork City and County in the coming weeks must match this ambition for our region and commit to advancing progress on the key issues for Cork.

In this year of elections, we have one final opportunity to make our voice count; we urge each and every one of you to engage with the campaign over the coming weeks and to make your voice heard on polling day. Those elected to the 34th Dáil will be entrusted with shaping social and economic development over the next five years for you, your business, your community and your family.

Warm regards,

Conor
