Housing Action Plan Implementation Critical for Continued Economic Growth
 |
Cork Chamber welcomed the publication of Government’s Action Plan for Housing setting out a strategy to increase the supply of social housing and affordable homes. Titled ‘Rebuilding Ireland’ and totalling €5bn, the plan sets a roadmap to increase and expedite the delivery of social housing, boost private housing construction, improve the rental market, and increase the number of new homes to 25,000 every year by 2020. The plan also confirms that Government will publish a separate rental strategy by end-2016 as called for in Cork Chamber’s recently published housing report.
Reacting to the plan, Barrie O’Connell, President of Cork Chamber, said: “The scarcity of supply of affordable housing in proximity to our urban centres is arguably the single greatest threat to Ireland’s socio-economic development and the Number One issue for Cork employers looking to expand their presence in the region.” “In our pre-election campaign and recently published housing report, Cork Chamber has called for a strategy to address our housing challenges to bring long term equilibrium to our housing sector and we are encouraged to see the prioritisation given by Minister Coveney and our new Government to developing this action plan.”
