Dear Chamber Member,

This week we have the pleasure of announcing the three exceptional finalists in the INTERNATIONAL category of our Cork Company of the Year Awards 2021. This completes the list of finalists across the four categories and I would like to extend an invitation to you to join us next Wednesday, May 26th as we announce the winners and celebrate their successes this last year. Thanks to our sponsors Vodafone Ireland and media partner the Irish Examiner for their support of Cork's most prestigious awards. RSVP <HERE>.

The reopening of non-essential retail has boosted the city and towns over the past few days. This is a very welcome and much anticipated moment and I wish all who are opening their doors, and returning to work, the very best as they welcome customers old and new across their thresholds once again.

The Small Business Assistance Scheme for COVID (SBASC) eligibility will be extended and will now include businesses and sole traders operating from non-rateable or remote premises, which will be a great relief to those now in line for the financial support towards fixed costs. However, there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding the duration of other essential supports such as the wage supports, rates waivers and debt warehousing. We will continue to engage with political representatives on these issues to support a successful and sustainable recovery.

Aer Lingus yesterday announced the temporary closure of its Cork base from September to late November this year, and complete closure of its Shannon crew base. This is very distressing news for the employees who will be temporarily laid off, and it is a negative development for the region's direct connectivity to the US, Europe and beyond. If we are to protect the attractiveness of Cork as a destination for international investment and as a desirable location for business, Government must provide substantial support for regional Airports well in to 2022. These are issues that affect the whole of the region, and need a robust response from Government.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event and welcome you to contact me directly on 087-9471858 or by e-mail HERE to discuss any issues affecting your business. We are here to represent you.

Warm regards,

Conor Healy
