Cork Chamber calls for N28 to be Prioritised
Potential for 2,228 new jobs

Cork Chamber has called on the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Paschal Donohoe T.D., during his visit to Cork on Monday, to ensure priority status is afforded to the upgrade of the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road in the upcoming capital programme.

Cork Chamber believes that the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road upgrade  is a project that needs to be prioritised status due to the wider economic benefits its delivery will bestow on the region. Delivery of an upgrade to the N28 would offer a significantly improved capacity to serve and enhance the key industry cluster of multinationals and indigenous firms operating in the Ringaskiddy area. These make a substantial contribution to the health of both the Cork and national economy. The upgrade will also maximize the potential of our marine economy which is projected to grow exponentially in the years ahead through the work in the Irish Marine Energy Research Cluster (IMERC).

Cork Chamber commissioned Indecon International Economic Consultants to carry out an economic assessment on the scheme which showed that an upgrade of the road had the potential to create 2,228 jobs in additional direct employment, with an estimated €173 million in annual direct financial impacts.

Purple Ambitions Striving Forward

The submission date for the Cork City Purple Flag Award Application is fast approaching with the final application being submitted on July 10th.  The application, coordinated by Cork Chamber has brought together a multitude of stakeholders, working within and for the city has garnered the successful commitment and collaboration of all those involved. The awarding of the Purple Flag symbolises a location that offers a well-managed, diverse, entertaining and enjoyable evening and night out.

The application involved a self-assessment of Cork City centre area which focused on reviewing the evening and night time offering of the city under the five themes of the award scheme which are Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal, Place and Policy, was contributory in emphasising the positives and areas in need of attention for those visiting and enjoying the city centre area.

The final Purple Flag Award assessment, which will be undertaken by an external Purple Flag assessor and will take place in August, will inform the concluding section of the overall application and in doing so will be key to the final award decision.

The announcement of the final awarding decision is expected in November 2015.

Subsidised Training
New Training Skillnet

Cork Chamber is currently assessing the feasibility of establishing a training network which could specialise in the marine and/or agri-food sectors. Whilst we acknowledge that there are a number of training supports currently available for these sectors, we are seeking to address any gaps that may be apparent and establish a specific industry need.

The purpose of this survey is to gauge the level of interest for training in these sectors and to ascertain what training would be of relevance. Please complete the survey HERE

There will be a prize of a training voucher of €250 for BiznetCork Skillnet, the Cork Chamber Business School and the winner will be drawn at random next Friday, 10th July. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Aoife Dunne, Business School Executive on 021 4530141.
