Until the next returns due in May, keep an eye here, on social media and on our website for updates on our policy work. We would also like to keep you informed of our on-going policy work driving the Economic Development of the region, if you would like to receive regular updates from us please email Sarah here.

Submission on Future of Rail Services in Ireland

With the economy expanding and growing traffic volumes adding to congestion, commuting times and pollution, rail services carry an increasingly important role in the efficient, safe and sustainable movement of people and goods.

Despite facing a challenging a funding environment Cork Chamber is of the view that Irish Rail could and should form part of our strategic transport vision.

In response to a call for feedback on views on the future of rail services in Ireland and the funding of its delivery, Cork Chamber has thus made a submission to the National Transport Authority highlighting the important role that rail services carry for urban and national transport in Ireland.

Our submission, which calls for further investment in Cork commuter and intercity rail services, can be read here

Cork's Transition Year Students Invited to 'Go Places With Bus Éireann'

7 weeks to closing date for Bus Éireann’s new Transition Year competition

RTÉ Presenters Bláthnaid Treacy and Stephen Byrne encourage TYs to enter

  • Entries must be submitted by the entrant’s school after 9am on February 28th and before 5pm on March 16th
  • Open to all Transition Year students in Cork and beyond, the national competition focuses on developing ideas around bus transport through project work in several different categories.
  • Five regional winners will receive €3,000 in cash for their school, and the overall winners will also receive a day trip with entry to Tayto Park for their class*, with a private coach

Schools Prize Fund of €15,000

The deadline is fast approaching for Bus Éireann’s exciting new competition for Transition Year students, ‘Go Places with Bus Éireann’, which is running for the first time in the current academic year, 2016/2017.  With seven weeks left to enter, participating students will be in with a chance of winning one of five regional prizes of €3,000 for their school, and one national prize of a fun filled day out for their class* to Tayto Park, including complimentary use of a private coach.

Projects are being invited under a range of categories including ‘Safety’, ‘Technology & Communication, ‘Environment & Sustainability’, ‘Community’, and ‘Society, Culture or Sport’.  They can be submitted in various ways including via video, a written submission, a PowerPoint presentation or an academic poster.

Students are being asked to submit their ideas for how school transport and public bus transport can best support schools and the wider public. Bus Éireann is the operator of School Transport for the Department of Education and Skills and is also the largest provider of regional city, town and rural public transport services, with 650 vehicles in operation on 275 routes throughout the country. Its school transport operation involves over 6,000 vehicles servicing 3,000 routes to 2,000 schools.

As ’Go Places with Bus Éireann’ is based around project work with an education element, it can perfectly complement Transition Year curriculum. 41 million journeys on the School Transport Scheme

Bus Éireann’s PR and Media Manager Nicola Cooke said: “Every day, we carry 112,500 students to school and back – that’s over 41 million journeys per year on the School Transport Scheme alone.  We’re looking forward to hearing from Transition Year students from all over the country about some new and different inputs into public bus transport.”

Launching the competition, Bláthnaid Treacy, RTE’s ‘Can’t Stop Dancing’  and 2FM presenter said: “With the Junior Cert behind them, TY students have more time to think about what makes them tick. Public transport is so important and who better to help Bus Éireann get some ideas for the future than students?  This is a great opportunity for Transition Year students to get stuck in and play a part in shaping our public services.”

RTE’s 2FM and Two Tube presenter Stephen Byrne, who co-hosts with Bláthnaid, said: “We all use public or school transport at some point in our lives, so why not have your say?  There are loads of ways to be creative and Transition Years are well placed to come up with ideas. Projects are a great way of collaborating on these. Topics could range from better use of apps and social media – a personal interest of mine – to safety on board or engagement with schools and community groups.”

Subsidised Training
Critical & Innovative Thinking
Starts Feb 23rd - €130 for Chamber members!

  • Do you want fresh new ideas for your business?
  • Do you have ideas written down but unsure how to develop them?
  • Do you feel that ideas are for "ideas people"?
  • Are you very critical of your ideas? Are you quick to judge new ideas in general?

This one day workshop for people in business focuses on separating out a process that is often blended together, that is critical and innovative thinking/ In order to generate the ideas we need to move forward in business it is vital we suspend our critical or convergent thinking to allow divergent thinking, which is the breeding ground for new ideas. Everyone can be an ideas person; the key is to foster a divergent thinking approach which is devoid of that judgement and criticism we so often resort to as default.
