‘Cities for the Future: Learning from the Global to the Local’

This week’s issue provides details on the ‘Cities for the Future: Learning from the Global to the Local’ Conference EcCoWell 2013.

As part of our 2013 Policy Plan, the policy team continues to conduct a series of monthly polls to seek the views of our membership.  This month we want to know if you would be in favour of ring-fencing the €3 air travel departure tax for aviation and/or tourism-spending?   Further details are available HERE

On 26th and 27th September, a two-day international exchange conference ‘Cities for the future: from the Global to the Local’ will take place in the City Hall.  This conference will explore the EcCoWell approach which integrates strategies across ecology and economy (Ec), community and culture (Co) and well-being & lifelong learning (Well).

EcCoWell promotes integrating strategies to maximise the positive impacts on the health and educational opportunities of all citizens as well as developing the environmental and economic sustainability of the city, resulting in greater equality, social inclusion and ultimately quality of life. It has been developed out of the work done by the OECD and PASCAL International Exchange (PIE) and takes a holistic approach to city development encouraging the use of resources more efficiently by building on areas of common interest between sectors.

The Conference will be held to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival and is supported by the HSE, Cork City Council, CIT, City of Cork VEC and the Cork Environmental Forum.  It will provide a marketplace for an exchange of ideas, showcasing examples of best practice internationally and locally and features keynote speakers from the World Heath Organisation Healthy Cities, Learning Cities & Regions, European Green Capitals, cities aiming for Sustainable Economic Development.

Participation at the Conference is free of charge but early booking is advised due to limited place.  For more information please visit www.eccowell.com or to register to attend please contact Tina Neylon (TNeylon@corkvec.ie).
