Cork Heads West – Inaugural Flight To San Francisco Departs Today
Cork Chamber Chief Executive Conor Healy is part of a delegation, promoting investment in Cork, heading to the west coast of the United States today on the newly scheduled direct flight from Ireland to San Francisco. The flight will ease connection for the many companies from the region who have operations in Cork. Direct connection to San Francisco stresses the need to re-establish the Cork-Dublin link to create a seamless transition in transatlantic travel.

Dynamic HR Business Partner

The programme aims to develop participants’ skills and influence as a valued Human Resources Business Partner, to enable them to clearly define and present the value of HR to business leaders through effective use of a suite of tools and techniques.

It is designed to help participants to enhance their ability to influence across the business. The course also provides an overview to managing some of the key challenges for HR business partners.

It will enable participants to:

  • understand the roles and functions that the HR team play within the organisation
  • develop an awareness of strategies to increase the value they bring to the organisation
  • acquire the skills to effectively prepare and plan for consulting and influencing senior leaders
  • cultivate a powerful style in presenting a value proposition
  • explore ways to identify and deal with common barriers to achieving success
  • develop a comprehensive talent management process

The course presentation will draw from Dave Ulrich’s ‘HR Competency Model’ to help participants explore the competencies they exhibit or wish to exhibit and develop in their roles. Participants will receive Ulrich’s book 'HR from the Outside In: Six Competencies for the Future of Human Resources'.

 

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • Obtain practical techniques, strategies and skills for consulting with and influencing others
  • Be more confident and convincing in presenting HR proposals for investment to senior leaders
  • Confidently identify and present clear measurements of returns on investment for HR initiatives
  • Discover the value that the HR business partner can provide to the business
  • Understand all aspects of talent management and develop a plan for implementing or enhancing existing company processes
  • Understand the complexities of leading change in the organisation and develop the confidence to do so using simple tools and techniques

This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to improve their HR consulting skills, enhance their competence in measuring and communicating the value they bring to the leadership table and use these skills in the development of an effective talent management process and in leading change initiatives.

Certificate in Supervisory Management (FETAC Level 6)

Course Dates: 22nd & 28th April, 8th & 29th May (Must attend all 4 days)

Member Rate: €500.00

The main purpose of this programme is to provide candidates with the tools and techniques necessary to work in a supervisory management role in a wide variety of organisations by instructing them in key areas such as their roles and responsibilities, employment legislation, recruitment, performance management, data protection, operational planning and budgeting.

At the end of this programme, successful participants will be able to:

  • List the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor/line manager;
  • Analyse the process of staff recruitment;
  • Identify the key areas of workplace legislation and best practice in staff supervision;
  • List the main provisions of the Data Protection Act;
  • Develop operations manuals for work-related procedures, including systems for records management;
  • Prepare departmental budgets, taking into account a range of potential expenses such as labour and material costs, insurances and contingency;
  • Identify best practices in the ongoing training and development of their staff;
  • Manage performance and conduct effective performance appraisals.

This course is ideal for existing and newly appointed team leaders and supervisors, managers in business who have direct reports and who wish to learn best practice techniques for managing people through teamwork and people who wish to gain a professional, accredited qualification in the area of Supervisory Management.

Cork is participating in Futurallia Rhone-Alpes 2014, an International Business Forum which takes place from 4th - 6th June 2014 in Lyon, France. This forum allows companies to participate in up to 16 pre-schedules and personalized business meetings over two days. This is a multi-sectored event with health, well-being/living, chemical/materials, ICT/creative industries, energy, transportation and green vehicles amongst the sectors represented.

Seafood Global Expo

Seafood Global Expo, formerly known as European Seafood Expo, is the world’s largest seafood trade event and takes place in Brussels on 6th-7th May. It is expected that more than 25,000 buyers, suppliers, media, and other seafood professionals from over 145 countries will be in attendance at this expo. Attendees come to meet with existing suppliers, source new products, and network with other industry professionals.

 

The expo will feature more than 1,690 exhibiting companies from across 75 countries; with exhibitors supplying a wide variety of fish, seafood, and seafood-related products or services. The event will focus on the following industry areas:

  • Frozen fish and seafood
  • Value added seafood
  • Processing fish and seafood
  • Processing and packaging equipment

Business people from a broad range and size of companies located in Cork graduated on Monday  from the Biznetcork Skillnet Business School @ Cork Chamber.


Speaking at the graduation ceremony at the Maryborough Hotel & Spa where Minister for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock, T.D. presented a commemorative plaque to graduates, Ms Norma Lynch, Business School Manager, Cork Chamber said, “We are thrilled to be recognising the commitment and dedication of those who participated in over 120 training courses as part of our extensive training schedule in 2013. 765 employees from over 189 different companies have developed new skills and business knowledge across a wide range of subject areas which they can bring back to their workplace”.

The Hope Foundation is currently cooking up its new campaign – Eat4streetKids, which launches this May. To highlight the campaign the charity with their ambassador, writer, chef and food blogger Lilly Higgins have organised a cooking competition called ‘Sugar & Spice’.



The event will kick off at 2pm with music, family entertainment and of course lots of food. Sugar & Spice takes place this May bank holiday weekend at Bakestone café, Ballyseedy Home & Garden centre, Carrigtwohill, Cork.

To enter, email your recipe to Maggie@hopefoundation.ie , and choose your category - Sugar or Spice - the judges will crown a winner for each. The winners of the Sugar & Spice competition will receive an individual cooking lesson with the Sugar & Spice judges and have the opportunity to have their recipe published in Lilly Higgins’ column in The Sunday Business Post.


The selection panel comprises Lilly Higgins (food blogger and author), Christine Girault (LaSpoon Patisserie), Gautham Iyer (proprietor and chef, Iyers Restaurant), Ali Honour (Bakestone café, Ballyseedy Garden Centre) and Joe McNamee (food writer, Irish Examiner).
