UK-Ireland Trade
 

Ireland is one of the UK's largest trading partners. Here are some key statistics from the Office for National Statistics and the HMRC database on UK-Ireland trade.

  • In 2018 UK exports to Ireland were worth £35.1 billion; imports from Ireland were £21.6 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of £13.5 billion with Ireland
  • The UK had a surplus with Ireland in both goods and services
  • Ireland accounted for 5.5% of UK exports and 3.2% of all UK imports
  • Ireland was the UK’s 5th largest export market and the 10thlargest source of imports
  • The UK has recorded a trade surplus with Ireland every year between 1999 and 2018

As of the 3rd March 2020, COVID-19 cases have been detected across mainland China and in 64 other countries.

 

The risk of catching COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Ireland is still low. This may change. However, most people may continue to go to work, school and other public places, as usual.

 

The following is an update on risk level in Ireland, personal care and travel advice from the relevant authorities.


As of the 3rd March 2020, COVID-19 cases have been detected across mainland China and in 64 other countries.

 

The Department of Health lists the following areas as being affected with a spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

China |  Hong Kong  |  Singapore  |  South Korea  |  Iran  |  Japan  |  Italy (the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Piedmont)

 

Risk Level in Ireland

The risk of catching COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Ireland is still low. This may change. However, most people may continue to go to work, school and other public places, as usual.

 

Personal Care:

The most important action we can take to protect ourselves from COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is regular hand-washing and good respiratory hygiene.

Travel Advice:

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is updating travel advice, country by country, which can be found here. 

 

Contingency Planning:

The Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation has published a user-friendly checklist identifying a range of issues for enterprise to consider in responding to a COVID-19 outbreak.

 

Further assets:

The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre and Government of Ireland websites have further advice and banks of assets to download and share with employees, some of which are tailored to those working with the general public.

Recently the Cork Chamber Public Affairs team has made multiple submissions to public consultations.

 

These include the Sustainable Mobility Policy Review, submission to the Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy and the submission to the pedestrian and cycle route from Bury’s bridge to Carrigtwohill.

Getting the right transport strategy is vital for the future of the region
 

"Fortunately for Cork, Government policy and stakeholder consensus are on the verge of being enshrined in a National Transport Authority plan, called the ‘Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy’ (CMATS), which demonstrates that the answer for Cork includes roads, buses, cycling, walking, and rail."

Stepping into Sustainability

This session will commence with a brief overview of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the role of business, the importance of sustainability to business growth and more. The information buffet will conclude with an expert panel discussion around what SME’s can do in relation to employee wellbeing, inclusion, bio-diversity and much more with plenty of opportunity for Q&A.

 


Horgan’s Quay Improvement Scheme
 

Cork Chamber will make a submission to the Cork City Council’s public consultation on the Horgan’s Quay Improvement Scheme. The main features of the proposed scheme are the provision of inbound cycle lane on Water Street and Horgan’s Quay, upgrading of footpaths and improvement in junction safety.
