Dear Chamber Member,
I hope you, your families and colleagues are well.
As we approach the end of November, we must pause and note the exceptional nature of recent successive jobs and investment announcements from companies such as from companies such as Qualcomm, Cadence and Pfizer, WorkVivo and Global Shares. The exceptional Cork showing in the finals of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year and the success of West Cork Distillers’ John O’Connell as Industry EY Entrepreneur of the Year are also tremendous achievements.
Our events schedule is pressing on and in the weeks ahead we will host a virtual Charity Christmas Lunch, the fourth installment in our Sustainable Cork Webinar Series and 'Bringing Europe Closer' which will explore the new direct connections between Cork and mainland Europe at Zeebrugge, Belgium, in the context of Brexit.
This week we held our final Business Breakfast Live in 2020, which featured Ann Doherty, Chief Executive of Cork City Council. Our discussion naturally explored the impact of Covid-19 in our region, but also the development plans for the future of the city, flood defences and what Ann described as the 'swagger' that makes Cork. As patterns of work change in businesses, so too have the demands for our training provisions. Our Skillnet team provides both remote and tailored training packages, so please get in touch with Garrett@corkchamber.ie with your training needs.
As news regarding our level on the Plan for Living with Covid-19 emerges this week, we will update via our social media. Follow via twitter here, or Linkedin here and please feel free to contact me or one of the Chamber team if we can be of assistance to you.
Warm Regards,

Support for SMEs to forge links with Belgian partners
Enterprise Europe Network - events & profiles from Belgium
Ahead of the ‘Bringing Europe Closer’ event tomorrow, 27 November to mark the launch of a new shipping route from the Port of Cork to the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, it’s of value for Cork's SMEs to look a little closer at existing links and the value of the Belgian market.
Belgium is often viewed as an excellent springboard into mainland Europe and a cost-efficient test market which can be a good indicator of similar success in other European markets.
Belgium is also a European leader in logistics and distribution; mainly driven by its strong cluster of ports. 80% of the continent’s purchasing power is situated within 800km around Brussels, while the country’s comprehensive system and distribution network makes it easy for companies to distribute their products.
Belgium ranks as Ireland’s 2nd highest EU partner when it comes to exports with €1,960 million Irish exports to Belgium in 2018 (CSO: 2018) of which Pharma and Life Sciences have been a continuously strong sector for Irish exports. Alongside this Belgium as a country is heavily reliant on imports.
Enterprise Europe Network Partners in Belgium
Enterprise Europe Network is represented in all three Belgian regions, Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. Irish companies can be connected with EEN partners and SMEs across 14 locations in Belgium at organisations including innovation agencies, Chambers of Commerce, business support agencies and third level institutes.
Our partner for Thursday’s event, Flanders Investment and Trade is located in the Flanders region - a region with a reputation for innovation and ranked first in Europe for the proportion of enterprises with innovation activities (2016 Eurostat Community Survey, published in 2019). Flanders is also home to the university city of Leuven, the European Capital of Innovation 2020. The city of Leuven has established a unique leadership that facilitates collaborations between citizens, knowledge institutions, businesses, and local organisations.
Specifically, Enterprise Europe Network partners in Flanders are located in the cities of Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Hasselt.
