The Transport and Mobility Forum Cork (TMF) would like to invite you to this year’s Mix Your Mode Seminar which Celebrates 10 years of Cork TMF. The seminar will take place on Friday 21st April at Cork City Hall. In celebration of our 10th anniversary, we will look back at achievements, changes, and challenges over the last 10 years and look forward to try and identify the priorities, challenges, and, opportunities for sustainable transport over the next 10 years
The half day, morning seminar will begin with a series of talks followed by an interactive Fishbowl the last 10 years in sustainable transport, after an interval with refreshments and an opportunity for networking we will look forward to the next 10 years.

A YEAR ON… TRANSPORT AND CONNECTIVITY IN A POST-COVID IRELAND
Active Travel- A Driver of Public Health
Periods of lockdown have seen far less cars on the road. People are re-discovering the joy of cycling and getting to know their local neighbourhoods better, enjoying cleaner air and for some, the sound of birdsong. Will this disruption result in sustained behavioural change or will we return to pre-COVID levels of car use?
Robert Burns, Director of Infrastructure, Sustainable Mobility and Climate Change in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, will present on their impressive COVID Mobility and Public Realm response as well as the success of their new Coastal Mobility Route. Frank Fitzgerald, Sustainable Travel & Road Safety Awareness Officer from Cork City Council will outline how they have responded and what lies ahead for Cork city. Dr. Marica Cassarino, Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Applied Psychology, University College Cork will discuss the psychological and social gains of promoting active travel and the increasing need to design cities that can sustain both health and happiness, especially amongst the most vulnerable groups.
Sustainable Rural Mobility
Dr. Páraic Carroll, Assistant Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin, will present on the recent research highlighting transport disadvantage and car dependency in Rural Ireland. Prof Brian Caulfield, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin will examine the issues of rural transport, drawing from international examples and outlining potential pilot projects that might work here.
We will be discussing how COVID has reconnected us with our rural towns and villages and for some, removed the burden of long daily commutes. Could COVID-19 be a catalyst for reviving rural towns and communities? David O’Brien, the Cork Local Link manager will outline how their ‘Demand Led’ service has adapted during COVID-19 to meet the evolving needs of the community. Alex Grassick, the newly appointed Digital Innovation Officer in Cork County Council will share their plans for responding to the new trend in home working by setting up Digital Working Hubs in county towns.
The future of Public Transport in Ireland
Public Transport has been hit hard with capacity running at 25% for much of the year. We will hear from the CEOs of Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann-Irish Rail, Stephen Kent and Jim Meade respectively, as to the impact COVID- 19 has had on the sector and discuss what the future of public transport in Ireland might look like. Darragh Kyne, a Commercial Analyst with Gas Networks Ireland, will discuss GNI’s role in decarbonising transport and highlight some of the great initiatives that GNI have been involved on which promote sustainable public transport using renewable gas.

Speakers Bios
Robert Burns- Director of Infrastructure, Sustainable Mobility and Climate Change in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
Robert Burns is a Director of Service and part of the senior management team within Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, with responsibility for the management and delivery of infrastructure and climate action-related projects. He has led on the Council’s response to Covid-19 with mobility interventions and adaptation of the public realm, including village upgrade projects in Blackrock, Dundrum, Dalkey and Glasthule, involving the removal of traffic lanes, enhanced public space and installation of cycling facilities. Robert was also the project manager for the new Coastal Mobility Route, which is a 2-way, 5 km cycle route, between Blackrock and Sandycove, which was built within a 3-month period during Covid. He has a wide interest in the fields of transportation, mobility, town and village renewal and climate action. Robert has a breadth of knowledge and experience across transportation, civil and environmental engineering, with experience in the private, semi-state and public sectors.
Talk Title: Active Travel in Ireland – Lessons Learned from Covid Mobility Interventions
The presentation will look at the lessons learned from the Covid mobility and public realm interventions implemented in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County in 2020 and how this might inform the provision of safe and connected active travel facilities in other parts of Ireland, as well as helping us to re-imagine the public spaces in our villages, towns and cities.
Dr. Marica Cassarino-Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Applied Psychology, University College Cork.
Dr. Marica Cassarino is a Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Applied Psychology, University College Cork. Her main area of interest is in Environment Psychology, a discipline that looks at how people interact with their physical environments and how such interactions might influence behaviour, health and wellbeing. Marica is passionate about understanding how the design of built and natural spaces can make people not only healthy but also happy. As a member of Pedestrian Cork, she led a large survey to get a user perspective about walkability in Cork.

How can active travel make a happy city? In her talk, Marica will discuss the psychological and social gains of promoting active travel, drawing from her own as well as international research. The presentation hopes to stimulate a reflection on the increasing need to design cities that can sustain both health and happiness, especially amongst the most vulnerable groups.
Prof. Brian Caulfield– Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin
Dr Brian Caulfield is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin. His background is in Transport Science and he has been a part of several large projects that have looked at behavioural change in transport. He has used many analysis techniques to measure the impacts of these changes such as stated preference, cluster analysis, nudging techniques and conducted many field trials. He has been active in transport research for over 10 years and to date has attracted €2.5m in research funding from both National and EU funding sources. In 2017, he addressed the Irish Citizens Assembly on Climate Change, providing evidence on what low carbon transport options Ireland could adopt to meet emission reduction targets and in 2020 provided evidence to the Climate Change Advisory Authority on transport and climate change. He is currently on an OECD working group examining rural connectivity.
He has widely published on transport and its impacts on the environment, he has published over 170 journal and conference papers and has a H factor of 25 and his work has been cited over 2,500 times. Dr Caulfield also sits on the Editorial Board of three world class and high impact journals, Transport Policy, Transportation Research Part D: Transport and the Environment and Case Studies on Transport Policy and the Journal of Transport Geography. He is also an Associate Editor of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews.
Talk Title: Learning from international examples on providing sustainable rural mobility
Dr Caulfield’s talk will draw on international examples of how to examine the issues of rural transport can be addressed. The talk will draw on experiences from around the world and describe some potential pilot projects for Ireland.
Dr. Páraic Carroll– Assistant Professor in the School of Civil Engineering, University College Dublin
Dr. Carroll joined UCD in 2019, prior to which, he worked as a Transport Modeller in the Transport Planning and Capital Investment Division of the National Transport Authority (NTA). During this time, he advised government departments on the appraisal and assessment of national transport strategies and policies including public transport and active mode schemes. Dr. Carroll has also provided guidance to the Irish Climate Change Advisory Council on transitioning to low carbon and sustainable mobility in Ireland. His research expertise lies in the modelling of travel behaviour, multi-modal transport networks and systems, with a keen interest in modelling potential solutions and pathways for decarbonisation and electrification of transport and mobility. He has authored circa 25 research papers and has written research proposals for National and European funding that have brought approx. 1 million euro to UCD.
Talk Title: Transport Disadvantage & Car Dependency in Rural Ireland
Dr. Carroll will present the methodology and results of a recent study which examined the identification of hotspots of transport disadvantage and car dependency in rural Ireland.
This study explored the concepts of car dependency and transport disadvantage and the correlation between them in rural Ireland as a means of highlighting incidences of possible forced car ownership with the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Jim Meade– Chief Executive Officer, Iarnrod Eireann-Irish Rail
Jim Meade was appointed Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann / Irish Rail in in May 2018. He had previously been Director, Railway Undertaking since 2013 responsible for all passenger and freight services. Jim began his railway career as an apprentice fitter in 1979, joining the company as a fitter in Limerick Locomotive Shed upon completion of his apprenticeship in 1983. Since then Jim has worked in a range of roles including fleet maintenance management, strategic change programmes, District Manager in Limerick, and Regional Manager in the west of Ireland, before becoming Director of Train Operations. Jim leads the management team in ensuring that the railway is operated and maintained in a manner that prioritises safety for passengers, employees and third parties; provides a quality customer service to all who use the rail network; strengthens the productivity and performance gains that have been achieved in recent years to secure a sustainable financial position; and delivers rail’s contribution in support of the Government of Ireland’s policies on sustainable development.
Talk Title: Iarnród Éireann Post Covid-19 & Climate Action and Sustainability
Iarnród Éireann is Ireland’s national rail company and owner/operator of Rosslare Europort. We have maintained essential travel on our network to support Ireland moving during Covid-19. We continue to implement our strategy to develop our services and CEO Jim Meade will discuss the important role that Iarnród Éireann plays in Ireland’s public transport network to support Climate Action and a Sustainable Future post COVID-19.

‘Female Change-Makers Transforming Mobility in Ireland’
The Transport and Mobility Forum Cork (TMF) hosted their annual seminar in Cork County Hall on Friday 6th March at Cork County Hall. In celebration of International Women’s Day there was an all-female podium and panel discussion highlighting; ‘Female Change-Makers Transforming Mobility in Ireland’. The half day, morning seminar began with a series of talks followed by a Panel Discussion with opportunity for networking during the interval refreshments. There were 5 speakers including the Keynote Speaker, Ms Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority as well as the President of Cork Chamber of Commerce, Ms Paula Cogan.

MIX YOUR MODE SEMINAR 2020_Bios
The seminar highlighted the role of women in sustainable urban mobility and featured speakers working in diverse sectors from transport to business, planning to policy as well as education and architecture. We posed the following questions; What is the real cost of congestion in Cork? What is the future of mobility in Cork? Can we do more to make the transport sector more inclusive? Can our transport systems be more gender responsive? While there was a focus on gender, the Seminar was broad and covered many aspects of Sustainable Transport, Active Travel and how the built environment influences travel choices. The Seminar was CPD accredited.
Gender is one of the key socio-demographic variables that can influence travel behaviour, but it is often the least understood. Understanding travel behaviour by gender will help better design transport policies that are efficient and equitable. Women and men have different expectations, needs and constraints for using the various transport modes for their daily mobility. One undeniable example of this in the Irish context is the low number of girls and young women who cycle. In order to change this, the different mobility needs and requirements of women, female travel patterns as well as their safety and security concerns need to be better understood.
European Mobility Week 2019
This year’s European Mobility Week theme ‘Walk With Us’ focuses on ‘safe walking and cycling’ and the ways active mobility can benefit our health, environment, and bank balances. We are delighted to be running two new events this year in partnership with the Southern Regional Assembly and Cork City Council through the MATCH-UP project. There will be a fun Mobility Race in the morning ‘Race Against Rob’ (Sign up )followed by a series of talks at our Mobility Cafe (Get Tickets) in the library in the afternoon. Both are free and open to the public. We will also be running Parking Day with an special event at The People’s Parklet. See details below.
Race Against Rob
The Southern Regional Assembly as a partner in the MATCH-UP project along with our Stakeholders Cork Transport Mobility Forum and Cork City Council wish to invite the public to join us in celebrating the progress Cork City has made in achieving significant improvements in low carbon multi-modal interchanges in the city. To showcase these improvements we will be hosting a “Race Against Rob” during European Mobility Week on 20th September 2019 in Cork City. World Champion, Olympic Medallist and National Record Holder for the 50km walking race – Rob Heffernan a native of the real capital of Cork will be leading the race. Rob is a community and youth ambassador and will be joined by a number of transition year students and the general public to highlight the 2019 European Mobility Week theme “Walk with Us!” – focusing on safe walking and cycling and the ways active mobility can benefit our health and environment.
The public will “Race against Rob” using other low carbon means of transport including walking, cycling and public transport. The race will commence at the newly refurbished transport hub at Kent Train Station at 11.30 and will include a number of routes between 5km and 11km around Cork City with the finish at Cork City Library on the Grand Parade. The route will include crossing the new Mary Elmes pedestrian and cycle-bridge and will highlight the pedestrian and cycle infrastructure upgraded in recent years.

MATCH-UP, a four and a half-year, 5-partners project was approved for a grant of €0.9m by the Interreg Europe Programme and commenced in July 2018 at a meeting in Bologna. The partnership consists of 4 European regions – Southern & Eastern Ireland, County of Northeim, Germany, Municipality of Funchal, Portugal and Timisoara Municipality, Romania who are working together to share experience, solutions, and good practice to develop and deliver better public policy to reduce carbon emissions and support low carbon urban mobility in designated urban centres.
MATCH-UP is part-funded by the Interreg Europe Programme through the European Regional Development Fund and led by the University of Bologna in Italy.

Parking Day
PARK(ing) Day will take place again this year around the streets of Cork city on Friday 20th September. PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform paid parking spots into temporary public parks. Since its inception in 2005, the concept has blossomed into a global experiment in remixing, reclaiming and reprogramming vehicular space for social exchange, recreation and artistic expression. The project now occurs annually in hundreds of cities in dozens of countries.
This year is extra special with the addition of The People’s Parklet and as part of Culture night, Cork Flower Studio will be running a flower arranging event at The People’s Parklet. TMF Cork 2019 Mix Your Mode Seminar- ‘Healthy Commuting Options and the Built Environment’
The Transport and Mobility Forum Cork is delighted to announce this year’s Mix Your Mode Seminar will take place on Friday 29th March at Cork City Hall. This year’s theme is ‘Healthy Commuting Options and the Built Environment’ which aims to explore how the built environment influences active travel. The seminar offers stakeholders a great opportunity to hear about and discuss modern sustainable and active travel developments and goals for Cork as well as learning about the Regional Assembly, EU Sustainable Transport projects, the work of SUSTRANS in Northern Ireland, Enhancing the Built Environment to make it more inclusive and other best practice examples here and abroad.
The half day seminar will be a combination of talks and discussions with opportunity for networking during the interval refreshments. There will be 4 keynote speakers as follows:

These workshop discussions will result in goals which we aim to take forward as individual projects. The workshop discussions are:
- Your journey today- a discussion around the different modes travelled today by attendees and how they could be improved. Facilitated by Sandy McGroarty (TMF Coordinator)
- Small Changes, Big Impact- how low cost measures in the built environment can lead to big behavioural change. Facilitated by Jeanette Fitzsimon (Lecturer UCC MPLAN)
- Mapping workshop for Cork City- Mapping the 5 and 10 minute city and looking at the boundary extension. Facilitated by Shane Clarke (CEO Nano Nagle)
- The Built Environment from the perspective of people with mixed mobility. Facilitated by Jessica Ni Mhaolain.
Mix Your Mode on your journey to the Seminar!
As part of this year’s Seminar we are asking you to ‘Walk the Talk’ and ‘Mix Your Mode’ when travelling there and back. A discussion will feature on the day looking at your experience of the different modes of transport and how they could potentially be improved. If you are taking the bus or train, why not hop on one of our public bikes and cycle to City Hall where there is a doc to park up (https://www.bikeshare.ie/cork.html). Or you could bring along your own bike, we even have a pump station outside the venue. If you are driving, you could choose to avoid the city centre traffic and parking fees by jumping on the Black Ash Park and Ride which drops you right outside City Hall (https://www.corkcity.ie/en/council-services/services/parking-services/where-to-park/the-black-ash-park-ride.html). Mix Your Mode Connectivity and Active Travel Seminar offers stakeholders a great opportunity to hear about and discuss modern sustainable and active travel developments and goals for Cork. Given the significant increase in population projected for Cork City and County over the next 20 years, the challenge is to have sustainable economic growth whilst maintaining a good quality of life for residents, visitors, local businesses and communities. Tuesday 17th April (PM) Mahon school trip on bus from Mahon to Blarney Castle to get students used to mix of travel modes e.g. walking and using the bus. Bus Eireann are kindly providing free transport whilst Blarney Castle kindly sponsoring event with free entry.
