Dear Chamber Member,

Firstly I hope you, your families, friends and colleagues are all well.

The publication by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD of the Roadmap for Reopening Society & Business is welcome and gives some structure, allowing us to work towards increasing our business activities again in the coming coming weeks and months. We must remember that this plan will only progress through each stage if we continue to adhere to the advice of Government which ultimately is designed to protect us, our communities and our families.

On Saturday May 02nd, Government announced additional measures to support business, and we urge you to review these carefully and consider their potential benefit for your business. The measures include a rates waiver, restart grant, ‘warehousing’ of tax liabilities, recovery fund and credit guarantee scheme. While these measures are a welcome addition to previously announced supports, they can only be judged on impact and accessibility. At a minimum the time frames referenced will need to be expanded and the interpretation of ‘impacted’ businesses broadened considerably. Over and above the minimum supports, more specific and deeper measures are required on a sectoral basis particularly regarding tourism, hospitality and retail.

As of Monday May 04th, the Wage Subsidy Scheme moved into its operational phase and updates have been made to the Guidance/FAQs document in light of this.

These updates and more are posted to our dedicated business supports page *click here*.

Please share your thoughts on what recovery means for your business with me on email <HERE> or 087 9471858 or with any of the team at Cork Chamber, as we continue to ensure that Government and business work together to improve our resilience.

Take care,

Supporting You
International Solidarity

The past weeks of global pandemic have seen a strange return to the raising of ‘borders’ throughout Europe and further afield, as countries and economies have struggled to find a balance between keeping trade and supply chains open, and protecting their people and goods in the name of public health. However, the pandemic has exposed great solidarity at national and global level, demonstrating how international co-operation, human assistance and kindness can be transformative and powerful tools in the face of a global crisis.

Useful tips to consider

There has been a massive increase in the stats on business email compromise, phishing campaigns and malware due to Covid-19.

There has been a massive increase in the stats on business email compromise, phishing campaigns and malware etc due to Covid-19.

While you may have fire walls, robust passwords, anti-virus software, you still need to be vigilant particularly when working from home. Here are some helpful tips for you and your teams:

  1. Be vigilant of covid-19 phishing attacks. Don’t click on links from unknown senders. If it looks odd or your wondering why someone who you haven’t been dealing with sent you a document to download or it looks like its from someone within the organisation have a look at the actual address the email is coming from and not just the name.
  2. Be aware of smishing campaigns also. Smishing is SMS phishing. You might get a text with the word Urgent or some of the text in Caps. Don’t click on the link its more than likely smishing
  3. Name Spoofing: This is where the sender has studied your company structure and created a wholly false email address but used a legitimate name. Again always check email address behind the name.
  4. Be mindful of your surroundings when on video calls. Is there personal data in view, privileged info etc.
  5. Just like the office lock your laptop when away from your home office desk. Use work laptop for work only
  6. Check your wifi settings. Can anyone log in? Have you got a complex password?
  7. Use secure communication channels when sharing work info for example email, Microsoft teams, Server etc. don’t use whaps app etc
  8. Make sure all data is kept confidential. If you would normally shred in the office then it needs to be disposed of in a similar way at home.
  9. In terms of GDPR the same rules apply as they would in the office. No sharing of person information with third parties, don’t add people to mailing lists without consent etc
Enhancing Your Environment
Increasing the Liveability of our Urban Spaces

Now more than ever we’re in a situation that tests the resilience and robustness of our urban and community spaces. To aid the society-wide response to COVID-19, we must initiate a review of shared public realm and the spaces allocated to pedestrians and cyclists, and where possible and appropriate adapt the urban and community recreation spaces to meet this challenge going forward.
