Weekly Business Update

Monday was packed with good news stories coming out of Cork. Four exciting business announcements were made in one day. A quick catch-up on all that’s happening below.

Over breakfast, SIRO announced plans to make Cork the broadband capital of Ireland with a €60m investment bringing gigabit network to another 75,000 homes and businesses across Cork city, suburb and towns.

By mid-day, the new ‘We are Cork’ place brand for the region was unveiled.

At lunch, we visited Australian software company HealthKit at the opening of their new EMEA office in Cork, adding to our growing tech cluster. More on this here.

Finally, before going home, we stopped by PWC for the celebration of their expansion in One Albert Quay, adding 80 new jobs and a 40% increase in office space.

Quality of Life to be Focus of Budget 2019
Housing, Public Transport and Childcare among top recommendations to Government

“If Budget 2019 delivers one thing only, it should be measures to increase the supply of accommodation in our cities and town centres”: This is the key message coming from Cork Chamber in its pre-budget recommendations submitted to Government last week. This comes as Cork Chamber members state housing as their number one budget priority in the latest economic survey.
Quality of life takes centre stage in the Chamber’s budget submission. More affordable rental accommodation and housing, better public transport and improved supports for working parents are all listed among the top recommendations ahead of budget day.

Chamber Present Budget Submission to Department of Finance

The Chamber team today presented their Budget 2019 submission to the Senior team at the Department of Finance on Merrion Street.

Speaking afterwards Conor Healy said, “We were pleased to have an open and frank discussion with the Department centred on the economic growth and potential of Cork as Ireland second city and economic driver. We wish to see a steady and incremental budget with a focus on areas such as housing for 2019.”
