Cork Chamber Reflection on Budget 2017

Reacting to Minister Noonan and Minister Donohoe’s budget speech, Cork Chamber welcomed Budget 2017 as broadly pro-business, a step in the right direction for future-proofing the Irish economy but more could have been achieved.

Responding to the competing issues for prioritisation in the budget, Barrie O’Connell, President of Cork Chamber, said: “We are encouraged to see a focus on housing, education, high-speed broadband provision, and universal childcare subsidies, all of which will play a key role for Irish businesses to retain and grow their talented workforce and remain competitive in a sustainable manner. However, one in 5 people now live in rental properties and while we welcome the measures incentivising landlords we need to see more stimuli aimed at increasing urban purpose-built rental accommodation to meet the growing demand for affordable rents.” read more here

Message from our President, Barrie O Connell
Shine a Light

On 21st October I will be sleeping out on the grounds of Cork City Gaol to shine a light on the issue of homelessness in Ireland today. I am joining other Business Leaders to raise funds to support the vital work of Focus Ireland and their aim to end homelessness in Ireland.

Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home cooked meal and sinking into darkness. I don't want to accept this as todays landscape in Ireland so I'm joining my peers to make a difference.

Please lend your support by sponsoring my journey.
