Cork Chamber was delighted to welcome Central Bank Governor Philip Lane to our latest Thought Leaders Council.


At the event Governor Lane shared his insights into prospects for the Irish economy, the external challenges facing the economy including Brexit and protectionism, as well as the Central Bank rules governing the mortgage market.

This event is being run by EEN at Cork Chamber, in association with Local Enterprise Offices, Cork, as part of Enterprise Week. In terms of Brexit, there are a lot of known knowns and known unknowns and the impending Brexit will mean that companies will face changes, opportunities and challenges over the next few months; resulting in a need for companies to address their Brexit strategy accordingly. The seminar will aim to outline what businesses should be thinking about and doing to address the short and longer-term implications of the UK’s vote.

About the speakers:

Dr. Mary C. Murphy is a lecturer in politics with the Department of Government, University College Cork. Mary’s primary area of research interest is Northern Ireland and the European Union and the dynamics of the relationship between sub-national and EU politics. Her research has also been published in a number of leading political science journals, including British Journal of Politics and International Relations, Ethnopolitics, Irish Political Studies, Parliamentary Affairs and Regional and Federal Studies, and she has contributed book chapters to a number of edited volumes.

 

John Finn is Managing Director of Treasury Solutions Ltd., an independent entity providing debt advisory (including restructuring) and corporate treasury risk management. The company was established in 2001 as an independent entity providing debt advisory (including restructuring) and corporate treasury risk management services to the corporate market. It has a broad base of domestic and multinational clients covering both public and private sectors. John is a regular contributor to the media on treasury and banking matters and in more recent times, on the topic of Brexit, his work included the production of the webinar for Enterprise Ireland on the financial ramifications of Brexit. Prior to establishing Treasury Solutions, he held senior management roles with Musgrave Group Ltd., Borden Foods and Ryanair. A commerce graduate of UCD, John is also a Fellow of both Chartered Accountants Ireland the UK Association of Corporate Treasurers.

 

PJ Timmins is CEO of The Alternative Board (TAB). TAB business owner advisory boards are comprised of an exclusive group of local business owner members who run non-competing businesses. Each month members come together to share expertise, solve challenges, and help each other seize new opportunities to achieve enhanced profitable growth and success. TAB is the world’s largest business peer advisory and coaching franchise. PJ qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PWC, and is a diploma holder in Corporate Governance from the Smurfit Business School. He has been a member of various boards for over 28 years, across software, property, retailing, healthcare and music industries, in addition to not-for-profit organisations.

 

Martin Corkery is Regional Director, South & East Regions, Enterprise Ireland. Martin leads the development and implementation of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy for indigenous industry in the South and South East region. Martin has previously held the roles of Regional Manager and Senior Development Advisor, also with Enterprise Ireland, and has much advice and expertise to offer the start-up or established Irish company looking to grow internationally.

Professor O’Shea became the 15th President of University College Cork on 1st February 2017.  A UCC Physics graduate and former Vice President and Chief Research Officer at the University of Maryland in the US, Professor O’Shea was at the helm of a $500 million (€470m) per annum research and innovation enterprise. His academic, political and business acumen helped the University to become one of the leading research universities in the world.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to hear Professor O’Shea speak publicly about his new role in UCC and what the future holds for this prestigious and world-renowned University.

Have you experienced difficulty with regulation Regulation No. 1169-2011, on the provision of food information to consumers? Some aspects of this legislation that have been identified as burdensome are as follows:

  • Obligation for food business operators in the catering and restaurant sector to provide allergen information
  • mandatory food information (art. 9)
  • storage conditions or conditions of use (art. 25)
  • mandatory nutrition declaration
  • restrictions to the presentation of the products (art. 34)
  • fair information practices (art. 7)

 

If you have encountered difficulties in implementing this legislation, we would like to collect data that would include: anecdotal evidence; estimates of additional costs incurred; inconsistencies in enforcement etc.; and written testimonials from business.
