Crann's Accessible Playground

One of the biggest aspects of a child’s life is the ability to play, socialize, and interact with other children. But the approx. 140,000 children in Ireland who live with a disability face barriers when using playgrounds and community leisure spaces.

Crann has set out to change that in a meaningful way.

We are building a ¼ acre, fully inclusive play and leisure space for our clients at the Crann Centre in Ovens, Co. Cork. Construction commenced in July 2021.

Our fully accessible and fully inclusive Playground and Leisure Space will be a place where children, teens, adults and families of Crann clients, will be able to learn and play together.

Who we are.

Today, life in Ireland can be more difficult for people living with neuro-physical disabilities.

But what if it didn’t have to be this way? At Crann, when the world said “can’t”, we’d say “can”.

Crann is a trailblazing charity that creates personalised solutions for people living with neuro-physical disabilities like Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Childhood Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury, though this isn’t an exclusive list. Together, we can help families find their best way forward.

We offer cutting-edge innovation at our amazing, purpose-built and fully accessible centre, in-person and online. We solve the things that get in the way of everyday life, from incontinence to mobility.

With your generosity, we can deliver ground-breaking services.

Let’s grow together.

A playground designed by families, for families.

Through our work with children and adults with a disability and their families, we identified that children are missing out on the benefits of physical outdoor play with their siblings and other children. This impacts their emotional and physical wellbeing, inhibits their physical health, and reduces their mobility.

As a result, we conducted research with our members in summer 2020 with the guidance of play researcher Alice Moore and colleagues from the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at University College Cork.

Through this research, parents expressed the impact of not playing together as a family. Being excluded from risky, unstructured and social play has impacted their child’s wellbeing and development.

Their specific needs have fed into the design of our state-of-the-art fully inclusive facility. There is ample accessible parking on-site, access to several accessible bathrooms, as well as buildings for groups to sit, relax and dine.

The horticultural therapy area, pizza oven and barbeque will let children and adults learn new skills and socialise. Outdoor exercise machines will allow clients to socialise while they exercise.

Often, people with a disability engage in less physical activity than recommended. Promoting accessible spaces in which to be active is of vital importance.

Helping increase Crann's service capability

As well as being a place where Crann's clients and their families can spend valuable time together, Crann will use this facility to deliver a wider range of programmes, such as Adaptive Movement programmes developed by our partners at Indiana University, to ensure the best therapies with maximum fun!

You can make a real impact on the way families with neuro-physical disabilities play and learn.

You can support this unique development by helping us to raise the €500,000 needed to fund the project.
