The 55th Summer Lunchtime Concert Series in The Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place, Cork opens on Thursday May 3rd in the Lecture Theatre. The series was founded by the late Gerald Goldberg and his wife Sheila in 1963. A full series of six concerts on consecutive Thursdays from May 3rd to June 7th will be presented, featuring some of our finest local artistes, many with international careers in their own rite, introducing some exciting new talent, and head-lined by internationally renowned Irish pianist, Finghin Collins who returns to the Gallery prior to a performance in the Wigmore Hall, London.
10 May
On May 10th we are proud to welcome back Finghin Collins to the series. One of Ireland’s foremost pianists with an ever-increasing international profile Finghin will perform Janácek’s dramatic and expressive Sonata 1.X.1905 (From the Street) and the first seven preludes from Rachmaninov’s Op.23 including the tumultuous and spectacular No. 2 in B-flat and the ever-popular No.5 Alla marcia.
17 May
8strings2abow with Elizabeth Cooney, violin and Gerald Peregrine, cello will perform a varied programme of music by Breval, Martinu, Shlepper-Connolly and Handel on May 17th. A graduate of CIT Cork School of Music now living in London, Elizabeth has established an extensive international career. She will be partnered by cellist Gerald Peregrine in what promises to be a performance of exceptional interest.
24 May
This year’s debut recital, on May 24th, features pianist Cillian Williamson. A recent graduate of the CIT Cork School of Music MA programme Cillian has multiple prizes in school competitions and at both Feis Ceoil and Feis Maitiu. He will play Beethoven’s magnificent Waldstein Sonata and Debussy’s Images Book II.
31 May
On May 31st Cara O’Sullivan, soprano, will be joined by Michael Joyce, piano to perform Poulenc’s La Courte Paille, Schumann’s Leiderkreis and a selection of popular operatic arias. Cara’s many performances over the years have been among the highlights of the Summer Series.
