European Commission Country Report for Ireland 2016

At the night of the general election, the European Commission published it annual country report for Ireland which assesses the economic situation in the country and identifies a number of reform agendas in need of being addressed by the incoming Government.

While the report recognised a strong rebound in the Irish economy, the European Commission also flagged legacy issues including debt levels, infrastructure needs, access to health and housing, inactivity traps, and unaffordable childcare as some of the remaining challenges that render the economy vulnerable and hinder Ireland’s investment potential.

The annual country reports form part of EU’s system of economic governance and is intended to alert policy makers of macroeconomic imbalances.

The full report can be accessed here.

Further Reduction in Unemployment Rate

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February fell by 0.1% to 8.8%, latest figures from the CSO show. Year-on-year the unemployment rate has dropped by 1.2% to its current rate, which marks the lowest level since 2008. Meanwhile, the total number of unemployed has reduced by 42% from its peak in 2012. This trend matches progress in the rest of the Eurozone, which last month recorded the lowest unemployment rates since 2011.

Although declining, youth unemployment remains high (20.1%) and is in further need of targeted action.
