Impact of Brexit on Ireland unclear - a Key Chamber Focus
On Friday morning, businesses in Ireland woke up to a new reality following the outcome of the referendum in the UK, in which 52% of voters opted to leave the European Union. The most significant immediate impact of Brexit on Ireland was seen over the weekend when the Pound Sterling devaluated and share values dropped, creating challenging conditions for exporters and companies heavily invested in the UK market. Britain is, however, Ireland’s second largest trade partner and will remain a key partner of Ireland even if outside the Single Market. While the medium to long term impact of Brexit on Ireland and the rest of Europe remains unclear, a priority for the Chamber will be to work with Government and other stakeholders to ensure a measured and organised UK EU departure with minimal disruption to trade. Equally, we will be working with stakeholders to seek opportunities for Cork arising from the British EU departure. In the interim, we encourage all members of Cork Chamber to assess the impact of Brexit on their business activities and put in place strategies to mitigate risks identified.
