Cork Chamber Actively Working For Your Business

Recently Cork Chamber issued a newsletter to members in Little Island; covering topics such as the submissions to the Proposed Amendments to the Cork County Municipal District Area Plans and the Cork Chamber submission to the National Planning Framework process. The newsletter also highlighted the upcoming planned Transportation Study which is to take place in Little Island. Cork County Council have recently appointed consultants Halcrow Barry & Systra to undertake this transportation study which is to include a comprehensive review of movement in Little Island with the objective to develop a traffic management plan.

See the latest newsletter online.

If you would like to receive further information  please email Michelle.

The scope of this plan is to include car usage and sustainable transport modes such as public transport and cycling. This study will include a public consultation phase with the process due to commence in June. Cork Chamber urges you either on an individual basis, or as a business, to make a submission to the transportation study and to have your voice heard either directly or via Cork Chamber.  A final draft of the report expected to be published in early 2018. Cork Chamber will keep you informed of this process and will be making a formal submission on behalf of Cork Chamber membership once this commences.

Irish Water Business Update

Gas Networks Ireland €700k Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Fund
Fund to assist businesses to reduce transport costs and emissions

The GNI Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Fund makes up to €20,000 available to businesses towards the purchase of a new Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV). The Vehicle Fund has made a total of €700k of funding available to transport operators. This will support the purchase of a range of commercial vehicles including trucks, buses and vans powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and is part of a process to promote natural gas as a transport fuel in Ireland.

The Vehicle Fund is supported by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) and is co-financed by the European Union’s TEN-T Programme under the Connecting Europe Facility as part of the Causeway Project.

CNG is natural gas which has been compressed to fit into a vehicle’s tank and is particularly suitable for use in commercial vehicles. A proven alternative to diesel or petrol, CNG provides the greatest cost saving (35%) and emission reduction benefits (22%) for transport operators. CNG is an established technology throughout the world. Worldwide, there are 19 million NGVs in operation, and of these, 1.9 million are in Europe.

The Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Fund is part of an overall strategy to provide commercial vehicle operators with a viable alternative to traditional fuels, both in Ireland and across Europe. Gas Networks Ireland is developing a national 70 station CNG refuelling network to provide nationwide coverage for vehicles operating on Irish roads. This national network will complement the pan European CNG network, which is already under development.

To apply for a Vehicle Fund application form, simply email quoting reference “17/029 Vehicle Fund”.

Applications are only valid once all required information is provided. Applicants must have a business registered in Ireland and confirm that the vehicle will complete a minimum km travel distance per year according to the vehicle type for which funding is sought. Terms and conditions apply with further details available from the Gas Networks Ireland website

The Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Fund is co-financed by the European Union’s TEN-T Programme as part of the Causeway Project.

Since his appointment as CEO in 2009, Jim Woulfe has led Dairygold through times of unprecedented change and difficulty in the agri-food industry. Despite the challenges Ireland’s largest farmer-owned co-operative has continued to prosper with an annual turnover of €760 million and capital investment of €200 million in the last six years alone.

But there’s no time to sit back and relax, Brexit has cast a long shadow over the Irish agri-food and drink industry as the UK is Ireland’s single largest export market. In 2016 37% of all Irish agri-food and drink exports were to the UK, which includes a staggering 60% of total Irish cheese exports. Jim has said Brexit “will have a profound impact on the Irish dairy and food industry regardless of how ‘soft’ or ‘hard’ it may be”.

Join us on Wednesday 28th June as we hear about these issues and more from Jim Woulfe on the past, present and future of Ireland’s agri-food and dairy industry.

New Cork-Zurich Route Opens, Providing Further Connectivity to Mainland Europe

Cork Chamber is delighted to welcome Swiss International Air Lines to Cork Airport, which will provide a new twice weekly service between Cork and Zurich from June to September.

Speaking as the inaugural flight landed, Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber said: “With this new route to Zurich, Swiss visitors will arrive right here on our doorstep. Ensuring that more people fly directly into Cork is key to growing the number, spend and length of stay of tourists in the city and county.”

In the past few months we have seen the number of trips to Ireland from mainland Europe grow by 2.2% which is hugely important to both the national and local economies. Tourism in Cork already supports 19,000 jobs and contributes more than €800m to the local economy every year.

“Given the wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered here, we believe there is scope grow these figures further and every new flight coming to Cork Airport supports this ambition.” Mr. Healy added.

“From a business travel perspective, the route also provides further connectivity to mainland Europe which is in high demand within the local business community. In a survey of our members undertaken in December about future route development from Cork Airport, Switzerland emerged among the top 10 destinations most desired. At Cork Chamber, we hope that there will be strong take-up of the flights so we can build on and expand this route after September” he concluded.
