Causeway: Ireland Scotland Business Exchange is a not-for-profit membership organisation that facilitates business connections from both sides of the Irish Sea. It's members are based in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland and share an interest in boosting professional relationships across all three regions. Causeway has just launched its flagship awards programme, and online applications can now be made under seven different awards categories. 


EdTech in a virtual world
 

EdTech has many different definitions & meanings but put simply it is “applying digital technology to deliver a new form of learning architecture” EdTech encompasses every aspect of our daily lives – formal education, informal education and work. Enterprise Europe Network is hosting an online event on 12th May, including expert speakers who will discuss these themes, followed by an opportunity for 1:1 pre-booked meetings.

Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme
 

The Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme (CEIGS) has been launched to support innovation and circular economy projects by social enterprises, voluntary and community organisations and businesses with less than 50 employees.

 

The total CEIGS is €250,000 for the 2021 call. The maximum year 1 grant available will be €50,000 - the indicative funding range for projects is €10,000 - €50,000. The closing date for applications is 5pm 28 May 2021

EP committees recommend giving consent to EU-UK agreement
 

Last Thursday, the Foreign Affairs and Trade committees voted in favour of the agreement that sets the rules of the future relationship between the EU and the UK. The agreement will be voted upon by MEP's in a upcoming plenary session.

I hope you, your families and colleagues are keeping safe and well, and that you have enjoyed the freedom to move within our beautiful county.

 

Our Economic Trends for Q1 2021 were released this week and there has been an encouraging confidence among our business community, with optimism for a busier business environment ahead in quarter 2. Thank you to all of you who participated in this survey, as these results have been well publicised in the media and are an important litmus test for business sentiment. In addition to measuring the core business operations, this most recent survey also reports on the advocacy priorities for the Cork region and action areas under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.The business insights can be viewed online <HERE>.

Warm congratulations to UCC for ranking 8th in the world by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Over 1,000 universities from 98 countries were assessed on their progress towards the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, giving UCC the opportunity to display a clear leadership position. The announcement is a strong build on the positive momentum being driven by so many stakeholders across the region.

 

Following the success of the 2020 Sustainable Cork Programme Webinar Series, we are delighted to kick off the 2021 series next week where we will explore the issue of Youth Employment. This talk will address the issues around social inclusion with a specific focus on youth unemployment. We will shine a light on how we in the business community can engage with organisations to address the growing trends here, for the betterment of our communities. Next week, we will begin announcing the finalists in our Cork Company of the Year Awards. It is a privilege to see such a high caliber of entrants progress through the thorough and comprehensive judging process. Update to Essential Retail Outlets
 

As per S.I. No. 168 of 2021 Health Act 1947 (Section 31A - Temporary Restrictions) (COVID-19) (No. 10) Regulations 2021, which came into operation on Monday 12th April 2021, the ‘Essential Retail Outlets’ list now includes:

Outlets that –

(a) sell shoes for children,
(b) provide shoe fitting services to children, and
(c) sell such products and provide such services on the basis of individual one-to-one appointments made on behalf of a child in advance of the child’s attendance at the outlet.
