Jack Lynch Tunnel scheduled to close for routine maintenance

Cork Chamber has been informed of the planned closure of the Jack Lynch Tunnel on the following dates in April. A section of the South Ring Road (N40) between Dunkettle Interchange and Mahon Interchange, including the Jack Lynch Tunnel & Tunnel Management Building /Little Island access road will be closed to normal traffic overnight for three successive nights as follows:

  • 21:00 hrs on Tuesday 19th April 2016 until 04:00 hrs on Wednesday 20th April 2016
  • 21:00 hrs on Wednesday 20th April 2016 until 04:00 hrs on Thursday 21st April 2016
  • 21:00 hrs on Thursday 21st April 2016 until 04:00 hrs on Friday 22nd April 2016

These closures are necessary to facilitate scheduled routine maintenance on the tunnel and its equipment.
In between these overnight closures period i.e. during the day on Wednesday and Thursday, the N40 including the Tunnel and its approach roads will be open to traffic as normal.

Alternative traffic routes are available via the city centre during the periods of closure as follows:

  • On the North side of the river, Southbound traffic should travel from the Dunkettle Interchange to the City Centre via the Tivoli dual carriageway and Lower Glanmire Road (N8), and then follow signs for the South Ring (N40) via the South City Link Road (N27).
  • On the Southern approaches to the Tunnel, Northbound traffic should travel via the Kinsale Road Roundabout to the City Centre via the South City Link Road (N27), and then follow signs for Dublin (N8) and Waterford (N25) via Lower Glanmire Road.


Cork Age Friendly County Programme Launched
 

Mayor of County Cork, Cllr John Paul O' Shea officially launched the Cork Age Friendly County Strategy on Monday April 11th in County Hall. The Mayor was joined by Tim Lucey, Chief Executive, Cork County Council, together with invited older members of the Cork community and students from Colaiste Choilm in Ballincollig.

Cork Chamber has been a partner in the development of this strategy and are delighted to have been so involved in this endeavour which aims to make Cork a great place in which to live and grow old. The Cork Age Friendly County Strategy is a five year framework plan, intended to provide a structure for interagency cooperation, essential to improving the quality of life for older people in Cork County together with the support of older people through the Cork County Older Peoples Council, statutory, community, voluntary and private sectors. 




Unemployment Rate Drops to 8.6%

The unemployment rate in March decreased to 8.6%, down from 8.8% in February and 9.8% a year ago, latest figures from the Central Statistics Office have confirmed.
The youth unemployment rate meanwhile stood at 19%, down from 20% the previous month. The number of unemployed is now at the lowest level in 8 years.

Cork Chamber in association with Network Cork is hosting an executive lunch on Friday 22nd April at the Ambassador Hotel, focussing on Women in Leadership and featuring special guest speaker Deirdre Somers, Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE).


Deirdre, a Cork native, was appointed Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE) in June 2007. During her tenure the ISE modernised its structure, expanded its services domestically and internationally, rising to #1 stock exchange globally in fixed income and funds listings. The ISE was awarded Best Place to Work in Ireland (medium sized companies) just last month. She is currently President of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges. Deirdre is outspoken about the importance of the role of markets as a relevant and accessible funding source for companies, particularly for high potential SMEs and is looking forward to sharing her views with the people of Cork.

Cork Chamber is proud to welcome back Richie Boucher, Group CEO of Bank of Ireland, to speak at the May Business Breakfast briefing as part of Bank of Ireland’s National Enterprise Week. Richie was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Ireland in 2009.

He joined the Bank as Chief Executive Corporate Banking in 2003 from Royal Bank of Scotland. Within Bank of Ireland, Richie has also held the position of Chief Executive of the Retail Ireland division of Bank of Ireland.  Richie has over thirty years’ experience in all aspects of financial services and is a Fellow of the Institute of Banking.

THE CORK INNOVATES PARTNERSHIP is now inviting expressions of interest from entrepreneurs and experienced business leaders keen to engage with and support the work of its steering committee.

 

The Cork Innovates Partnership was established in 2012 with financial support from the economic development fund of Cork City and County Councils.  The Partnership comprises of organisations who are engaged in entrepreneurial, innovation or business support activities and who collaborate under the mantle of Cork Innovates to promote the region with a specific focus on driving the economic reputation and perception of Cork as a location for business.   Members include ● Cork City Council ● Cork County Council ● Cork Chamber ● Cork Institute of Technology ● University College Cork ● Enterprise Ireland ● CorkBIC ● Cork City and County Local Enterprise Offices, all of whom have an appointed representative on the Partnership Steering Committee.


The Cork Innovates Partnership will play a pivotal role in promoting the Cork region in alignment with the high level branding and messaging currently being developed and rolled out across the city and region by the local authorities.  Acting as a liaison point, the Partnership will tell the story of Cork by sharing projects, success stories, opportunities and other developments associated with innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development in the Cork region to local, national and international audiences.

 

The Steering Committee is seeking to identify entrepreneurs and experienced business leaders interested in being appointed to the role of Chair or Vice-Chair.  Additional opportunities for engagement with the steering committee or sub-working groups also exist.  All appointments will be time limited with no remuneration attached to these roles.  The Chair and Vice Chair will provide leadership to the steering committee, working closely with the Project Director to support the successful delivery of its operational plan.

 

Of particular interest are individuals with a relevant mix of knowledge and skills and a track record in the following areas:

 

  • Strong interest in supporting the development of entrepreneurship in the region
  • Ability to negotiate a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Board membership / leadership experience
  • Business development track record
  • Investment expertise
  • International connections
  • Fundraising.

2016 will see a particular focus on the international Startup Nations Summit scheduled from 18th – 20th November in Cork.  This is the first time that this Summit will be hosted in Europe and has been won for Cork on the back of a bid researched, prepared and submitted by the Cork Innovates Partnership.

Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) B2B meetings at Info Security Europe, London, 8 June 2016
 

SecMatch 2016 will take place at Info Security Europe, an event which focuses on wireless and internet security. The goal of the matchmaking event is to enable and facilitate organisations in these fields to engage with potential partners for research, technology or business cooperation.

Organised by Enterprise Europe Network and the BeWiser (Wireless and Internet Security in European Regions) cluster network, the event is set in the context of the EU’s Digital Agenda, to further encourage research and innovation efforts and highlight commercial opportunities for European SMEs in wireless and internet security sectors. 


SecMatch 2016 is a free-to-attend international B2B matchmaking event for Cyber Security companies and will take place during the Info Security Europe Conference in London’s centrally-locate Olympia Conference and Exhibition Centre. Focused on wireless and internet security, SecMatch aims to enable and facilitate SMEs, ICT clusters, academia and investors to engage with potential partners for internationalisation via research, technology or business cooperation.
Organised by EEN and BeWiser (Wireless and Internet Security in European Regions) cluster network, SecMatch is set within the context of the EU’s Digital Agenda. Participants will have the opportunity to meet potential partners for research, technology transfer, investment, sales and licensing, joint ventures, subcontracting, trade intermediation, suppliers etc.

  • Short, sharp pre-arranged 25 minute meetings to foster effective networking

Scholarships available for Biotech Mission to Japan for EU Clusters and SMEs, 9-14 October 2016

The EU Japan Centre is currently calling for applications for the next matchmaking mission to Japan targeting the biotech sector and is being organised alongside the Bio Japan Expo in Pacifico Yokohama. The mission will enable participants to learn about the target market and industry and to identify key contacts for business or technology transfer partnerships or research collaborations. Interested SMEs can apply for a scholarship which is valued at €600. The closing date for receipt of applications is Thursday, 9 June 2016.

 

 


The EU Japan Centre is currently calling for applications for the next matchmaking to Japan which will focus on the biotech sector. The event is being organised alongside the Bio Japan Expo which will take place in Pacifico Yokohama. The goal of the mission is to enable participants to learn about the targeted market and to identify key contacts for business or technology transfer partnerships or research collaborations. Scholarships valued at €600 are available for eligible SME companies. 

The mission will comprise of lectures, visits to Japanese R&D centres and companies, and cluster-to-cluster meetings organised on-site at the Bio Japan Expo. The event is of particular relevance to companies operating in the following spaces:

  • Pharmaceutical and medical devices
  • Drug and drug discovery
  • Medical treatment, diagnosis
  • Bioinformatics and bio-imaging etc.

 In regard to costs, the EU-Japan Centre will cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Transfers during group company visits to and from Yokohama
  • BioJapan registration fee, including access to the exhibition and annex hall
  • Access to the partnering area and the partnering system provided at BioJapan
  • BioJapan trade-fair arrangements
  • Translation and interpretation services
  • Lunch for 3 days, welcome reception and closing cocktail
