Retirement Update: What’s in the New Code of Practice on Longer Working?

Ireland’s aging workforce is increasingly prepared to challenge mandatory retirement ages. A recent upward trend in the number of age discrimination claims looks likely to continue as more Employees seek to continue working beyond their contractual retirement age. Against this backdrop, the Workplace Relations Commission recently published a new Code of Practice on Longer Working (the ‘Code of Practice’). The updated Code of Practice includes guidance on the consent-based framework established by the Employment (Contractual Retirement Ages) Act 2025 as well as guidance on standard retirement arrangements. In this update, we examine what the Code of Practice says and what it means for Organisations.

For advice, support, or guidance about employment law compliance, Employee relations or any HR issues, contact Adare Trusted People Partners by calling 021 486 1420 or emailing info@adarehrm.ie.
