Pieta 100 Cycle
On the 29th of September David Gillick, Irish international track and field athlete, is supporting the Pieta 100 cycling challenge, now in its 5th year, to raise awareness and vital funds for their suicide and self-harm prevention, intervention and bereavement services
The event promises to be a great day out for all levels of fitness and cycling enthusiasts, offering participants a choice of a 50km or a 100km route.
David Gillick, explains “Since opening their doors 13 years ago, Pieta has heard painful truths from thousands of people of all ages, who have come to them at the lowest point in their lives. Events like this are critical for Pieta to continue to provide a direct service but also an opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors, being active and most importantly getting out with friends and meeting people. Social connection is at the heart of Pieta’s mission”.
Since its inception this cycle has raised over €300,000 for Pieta’s free suicide prevention and intervention services. They rely heavily on support from the public to help them continue to work with people to lift levels of suicide ideation, to help them bring hope back into people’s lives and to support people and families that have been impacted by the loss of a loved one by suicide.
Kieran Brady, Director of Funding and Advocacy, Pieta, said “we are so grateful to PRL for sponsoring the cycle once again this year, we are both proud and privileged to have the support of such an innovative and established Irish company. While cyclists enjoy the fun and hopefully sunshine on the day, people in crisis and those bereaved by suicide will continue to contact our free-phone Helpline, as access to this service is around the clock”.
Brady added, "the services Pieta provide are crucial in today’s society and it is of the utmost importance that our services are offered free of charge and no referral from a GP is required to access any of the services".
Our prevention service is a key pillar in the work of Pieta House. It’s the Pieta House Resilience Academy is an initiative to teach second year students positive mental health techniques and strategies. It's a six-week, evidence-based programme that was designed ‘with schools, for schools. Jack O’Riordan CEO, PRL said, “We are thrilled to be supporting Pieta 100 again this year as it was a huge success last year. Supporting Pieta is important to all our staff and we can see that our involvement goes a long way in assisting Pieta provide their nationwide therapeutic services free of charge”.
