ST FIN BARRE’S CATHEDRAL CONSERVATION PROJECT

ANTIQUES VALUATION “ROADSHOW”

 Sunday 21st October

Acclaimed antiques expert, George Stacpoole (as seen on RTÉ The Dealers) and President of The Irish Antique Dealers Association leads a group of experts coming to Cork on Sunday 21stOctober as part of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Conservation Project Fundraising Drive.

The Antiques Roadshow will run from12.15 pm to 4.30 pm in the River Lee Hotel, Western Road, Cork with Mr Stacpoole and other experts shedding some light on people’s most treasured and unusual possessions. Experts, including Dublin based James Weldon (silver and jewellery), Chris Southgate (collectables), Professor Alan Fletcher (oriental objects) and Michael Sheppard of Sheppard’s Irish Art Auction House will be available to value items of all types and sizes.

The fee is €10.00 for a valuation up to a maximum of 5 items. All proceeds go to the St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Conservation Fund which is currently focussed on rebuilding the organ. Parking and refreshments are available on site.

St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral Conservation Project is partnering with Sheppard’s Irish Art Auction House to hold an Antiques Auction to which will support the St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Conservation Project. The auction will be held in March 2013. Full details will be available on www.cathedral.cork.anglican.org

The Cathedral is now in the fourth phase of a major restoration of the building, namely the completion of the full restoration of the exterior stonework of the south transept (Dean’s Chapel); emergency works to gargoyles and prevention of water ingress at West front. This follows similar work to all three spires which have been completed. Earlier phases of work involved re-roofing the complete structure, re-gilding the angle and refurbishing the bells.

Internally, apart from our ongoing programme of marble and plaster work restoration, work is at an advanced stage on the re-building of the Cathedral Organ.  The organ lies at the heart of St Fin Barre’s whole seven hundred year old musical education and outreach programme in that it supports the work of the Cathedral choirs. This ancient Choral foundation offers free musical education to child choristers and young adults alike.
