Launch of First National Aviation Policy
 |
Cork Chamber has welcomed the recent launch of Ireland’s first National Aviation Policy which will guide the future development of the Irish aviation sector. However, the Chamber is concerned about the lack of specifics regarding the position of Cork Airport in the National Policy considering the crucial role it plays in the economic wellbeing of the region. The policy document includes a number of positive statements with regard to Cork Airport including the recognition of the Airport as the regional gateway for business and tourism. The document specifically refers to the Airports role as a gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East tourism trails, which will provide a significant platform on which to grow inbound tourism. However, while the commitment to support these opportunities is important the policy falls short on identifying and committing to specific measures and actions. The document also commits to undertaking a review of ownership and structure at Cork Airport in 2019 with a view to considering granting the Airport independence from the DAA if it considers this to be in the best interest of the Airport and region.
