Custom obligations for Exporters

The United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union. Irish businesses must now comply with custom obligations when moving goods to, from or through Great Britain.

Revenue is the authorised custom agent in Ireland and you are legally obliged to submit electronic custom declarations to them as an exporter.

Wood Packaging Material and ISPM 15

Most third countries (non-EU countries) have adopted ISPM 15 as the required standard for wood package material (WPM) to enter their territories.

The UK will require all WPM to undergo heat treatment and marking as per ISPM 15 International standards and checks at customs can be carried out upon entry or leaving to ensure standards are met.

Dear Chamber Member,

Usually, at this time of year, we begin to measure the stretch in the evenings, but in January 2021 the most talked about stretch is that to the level 5 restrictions. It is widely agreed that, while necessary, these very stringent restrictions are forcing us all to dig deep into our resolve and our ability to balance what sometimes seem to be insurmountable challenges - whether they are at work or home, or the unusual mix of current circumstances.

Notwithstanding how difficult this is, the business community continues to weather the limitations on trade and look ahead to brighter days. However, it is clear now that as Government extends the restrictions, the suitability and effectiveness of the financial supports to business need to be re-examined. The qualifying criteria for many of the supports are simply too narrow for them to be truly effective while under these high level restrictions. The wage supports, grants and CRSS all need to be reassessed in the immediate term to protect our valuable businesses and ensure we are in a ready position to build back better. And build back better we will.

That said, with a raft of positive announcements over the past week from Logitech, Alter Domus, Hidden Hearing, Lidl and much under the radar, Cork continues to push through the headwinds with force.

The announcement today that Shell are to acquire a significant 51% share of the Simply Blue Energy Kinsale venture is testament to the huge potential for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea and we are now witnessing the first significant waves of forthcoming investment. With renewable power for up to 800,000 homes, Ireland is stepping up and being a responsible global citizen. Reputationally, as a location for investment and travel, there are significant potential gains for any country or region that can make significant headway and it is essential that Ireland and Cork robustly support this transition.

This morning, as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence Simon Coveney TD addressed members at our first Business Breakfast Live of 2021, key items of Brexit and the pandemic were foremost in the discussion, followed by opportunities arising through the recent changes to the US Administration. Topical local issues around infrastructure and the critical role of sustainability in unlocking growth opportunities were also discussed, along with the Government priorities for Cork in the National Development Plan.

Through 2021 we will continue to bring you the best opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and exploring growth opportunities. We invite you to stay connected and look out for the upcoming and much anticipated Cork Company of the Year Awards 2021. More on this next week!

Our role in representing you, your industry and region continues to be at the fore of our activities and your input informs our agenda. On any issue or with any views please contact me directly on 087-9471858 or by e-mail HERE.

Take care,
