Cork Chamber welcome Zurich Insurance visit to Fermoy

Cork Chamber has long been an advocate in calling for the timely implementation of Flood Relief Schemes in areas affected by flooding events across the city and county. The region once again faced the stark reality of such events over the most recent Christmas period with businesses and homeowners overwhelmed by the immediate damage of such events and the consequent difficulties in securing insurance for their properties.

In light of this, Cork Chamber welcomed the visit to Fermoy from representatives of Zurich Insurance, on Tuesday 23rd February, where the purpose was to assess for themselves the flood defences that were erected in the town. Zurich Insurance will take any additional relevant information into account, such as the efficacy and robustness of flood defences, when assessing the viability of providing wider flood cover in areas impacted by flooding.

High Quality, Affordable Childcare Needed to Underpin Economic Future

Cork Chamber has called for increased investment in high quality childcare services as part of its wider election manifesto ‘Cork’s Call – A Vision for 2021’.

Commenting on the business need for investment in early childhood services, Barrie O’Connell, President of Cork Chamber, said: “The economic need for affordable, accessible and high quality childcare services has long been overlooked by Irish politicians. In consequence, Irish parents suffer from some of the highest childcare fees in the world with the average cost of childcare representing up to a massive 35% of a family’s income. This lack of affordability has negative knock-on effects on work participation, consumer spending, the number of children benefitting from early childhood education, as well as parents’ wage expectations.”

Employers Disability Information Service – New Facebook page

The Employers helpline and disability information service was recently launched. The purpose is to provide employers with an expert peer source of advice and information on employing staff with disabilities and to promote increased employment of people with disabilities. The helpline will be run by ISME in association with Chambers Ireland and IBEC.

The service can help business owners, managers and personnel responsible for staff recruitment.

The service will provide a dedicated phone helpline and website to help employers. For further information, visit  their website   or call 01-6622755.

Wednesday, 16th March, Nimbus Centre, CIT

The seminar is being run by Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) in association with the Rubicon Centre and will include nuggets of information for Irish SMEs that aspire to entering the UK market. It will take place from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm. Speakers on the day will include: Chris Lyons, EEN Bristol; Shirley McCay, Director of UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) in Dublin and Dirk Schaefer, Manager of the University of Warwick Science Park. The speakers will talk about opportunities for exporting Irish SMEs and there will also be case studies from Irish companies who have successfully entered the UK market.

The UK Market is a key market for Irish companies and accounts for €4 out of every €10 generated in total worldwide export sales from Ireland, with an estimated 48,000 Irish people running their business in Britain ('Access Great Britain', Enterprise Ireland, 2014).

Over €1.32 billion (GB£1 billion) of trade in goods and services is carried out between Britain and Ireland every week, with both countries being amongst the fastest growing economies in Europe presently.

Geographically close, the UK marketplace, with a population of 64 million, is on Ireland's doorstep with similar operating environments. It's an obvious choice for many companies when looking outwards. By being present in the UK, Irish companies are connected to a wealth of opportunities, especially in Construction/Engineering, Technology, Business and Financial Services, Food and Drink, and Agritech.

Places for the seminar can be booked here.

Following a complimentary light lunch, attendees will have the option of booking 1:1 meetings with the support agencies at the seminar. Please note that pre-booking is required for this element. Contact Katherine for further information.

Companies actively looking for business partners

The Enterprise Europe Network database contains over 12,000 company profiles. For the UK market alone, hundreds of UK companies are looking to do business in Ireland. This week, we are featuring UK companies that are seeking partnerships with:

  • Irish providers of wrapping technology for artisan cheeses (Ref. TRUK20160219001)

UK Company seeks Irish manufacturers of sportswear for commercial partnerships

The UK Company sells a range of unique multi-functional modular luggage systems for skis, snowboards, boots and associated gear. The products are long lasting, tested and easy-to-use. The bags are designed to accommodate flying, train and car journeys to snow and winter resorts, but can also be converted for use all year round; e.g. summer holidays and weekends away.

The Company is actively seeking Irish companies that could manufacture such products. Manufacturers should be able to offer short-term lead time turn-around at good prices. It is essential that potential partners are reliable and have experience in making bags/luggage for the snow sports industry.

Scottish producer of artisan cheese seeks Irish provider of wrapping technology

This well-established Scottish company is a producer of a range of artisan hard cheeses and seeks an Irish provider of wrapping technology to enhance its packaging process. Due to limited space, the company requires a wrapping machine with not too big a footprint, which will speed up their existing wrapping process, ensure a shelf-life of at least 10 weeks for the cheese wedges and retain the artisan appearance of the packaged product. The company requires Irish industrial partners for a technical cooperation agreement or a commercial agency agreement with technical assistance.

UK Company seeks innovative technologies for water utilities around the world

This company seeks innovative water or waste water technologies for municipal water utilities in the EU, USA or Australia. The company can offer innovative water-tech developers the opportunity to make technical sales pitches and seek Irish partners for a services agreement.

The British company is a water consultancy and has a team of engineers and scientists experienced in water, waste and energy sectors. It sources new water technologies on behalf of water utilities and runs a global programme of innovation meetings, the purpose of which is to accelerate market uptake of new technologies. Established in 2005, the company has a thorough technical understanding of water production, waste water treatment and the technology requirements of water utilities. New technologies are assessed through one or more calls or meetings. SMEs with suitable technologies will be asked to submit a short technical description; this is all that is required to participate.
