Greening Our City: From Green Spaces To People Places: The Transformative Power Of Parks
A lack of adequate and well programmed parkland is a far-reaching problem impacting many communities around the globe, with long-term consequences in terms of increased air pollution, lack of opportunities for outdoor physical exercise, places for children to play and recreate, and decreased opportunities for people to experience the natural environment.
Cynthia Nikitin, Resilient Places Consultant, based in the US, will provide examples of how, by integrating parks into the cultural lives of neighbourhoods, and by giving responsibility for developing new programs to, and engaging residents in the design process, parks can contribute significantly to the quality of urban life.
Cynthia has managed numerous large-scale and complex projects during her twenty-eight years with Project for Public Spaces, Inc., and since, serving as a compelling voice in support of more sustainable towns and cities nation-wide. Cynthia authored one of the first books on transportation and livable communities.
In this series, Cork Chamber teams up with SHEP Earth Aware, Green Spaces for Health, Cork Healthy Cities, the Environmental Research Institute, UCC and Cork Environmental Forum to bring diverse topic area webinars to you on making Cork a greener city. These sessions will highlight the importance of how a greener city is not only more pleasant to live in, or to visit, but how it also improves the health, wellbeing and social cohesion of citizens, helps sustain biodiversity, mitigates the effects of climate change and provides opportunities for innovative and sustainable economic development.
