Cork to Boston / and future Cork to New York routes

Add your SUPPORT by close of business FRIDAY 6th
MAY and have your voice heard.

As you know Cork Airport is on the verge of landing its first ever direct flights to the US – first to Boston followed later by New York. Both routes will be operated by Norwegian Air International.

Cork needs these flights. So do our businesses. By having a direct link to the East Coast, we will be able to create new business opportunities, grow tourism, attract more investment into Cork, and improve social ties between Ireland and the US.

On April 15, the US Department of Transportation tentatively approved Norwegian Air International’s application to commence flights from Cork Airport and announced that an extensive review by the US Department of Justice found no reason why the required license shouldn’t be granted, and entered into a 3 week review period where interested parties can make a supportive or opposing electronic submission on this issue.

Between now and Friday we need your help to ensure that the permit is approved and the flights secured once and for all. To show your support, we urge you to submit a comment via the official website linked below.

Key points to include in your comment:

  • I wish to express my strong support for the approval of Norwegian Air International’s Foreign Carrier Permit by the US Department of Transportation.
  • By granting NAI permission to operate flights from Cork to Boston and New York, both Irish and US national economies will benefit significantly – both in terms of new jobs created within the aviation industry, increased tourism as well as better connectivity opening up new business opportunities between the US and Ireland and strengthening the established business linkages between Cork and the East Coast of the US.
  • Air passengers will additionally benefit from increased free market competition on transatlantic routes through greater choice and more competitive fares as well as improved social links between Ireland and the US.
  • It is important to note that the proposed route is fully compliant with spirit of the US-EU Open Skies Agreement and the suggestion that Norwegian is offering substandard or unsafe working conditions is incorrect. NAI is headquartered in Dublin and Norwegian will be subject to Irish labour laws which are amongst the strongest in world. Ireland equally has one of the highest ranked civil aviation authorities in the world and an excellent safety record.
  • In summary, the establishment of these flight paths are an excellent opportunity to strengthen pre-existing ties and create new economic opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
