Dear Chamber Member,

I hope you, your families and colleagues are keeping safe and well.

Yesterday, Government announced that restrictions will begin to lift from April 12th, but on a phased basis. This is later, and slower, than we had hoped for, and there is still some road to go before many sectors return to meaningful economic activity. That said, there is much to give us hope, and we must continue to hold firm, working from home where we can and eliminating unnecessary contacts so that we will see improvements in the R-rate, that is so stubbornly holding us back.

The increased pace in roll out of the vaccine programme in parallel is undoubtedly a critical element in unlocking restrictions.

Notwithstanding the need to continue to heed the health advice to curb the spread of the virus, it is clear that the response from the business community over the last year has been nothing short of outstanding. Government must afford businesses the ability to plan with more certainty for the future and for their employees by giving clarity with metric-driven milestones to work towards over the coming months. Supports must be strengthened and extended to 2022 particularly for the most vulnerable sectors who will not be reopening for business for some time to come.

While our Public Affairs team continues to work to affect change and advocate for the supports needed to help sustain your business during these restrictions, our Skillnet team has prepared busy Spring-Summer schedule of subsidised training courses, designed to help upskill your team and prepare for your return to more normal work activities. Skillnet at the Chamber also delivers bespoke, in-house training for those who need it and our Training Network Manager Garrett can guide you in deciphering the best fit for you and your team. More HERE.

I hope to see you in the near future at one of our upcoming events as we continue to deliver free content for our Chamber membership. Our new Chamber Connects series, which kicks off on April 22 is the exciting new city to city series that brings members together to grow networks, nurture connections and forge new partnerships. More on events HERE.

I wish you all a safe and happy Easter and welcome you to contact me directly on 087-9471858 or by e-mail HERE to discuss any issues affecting your business. We are here to represent you.

Warm regards,

Conor Healy

CEO

Enhancing Your Environment
Update from Government

In line with the plan set out in COVID-19 Resilience and Recovery 2021: The Path Ahead, the government has announced the continued phased easing of restrictions for the month of April, to commence on 12 April.

Research: Survey to determine service demand on Limerick/Tipperary - Cork route

This study is being carried out to determine the level of demand for an early morning rail service from Tipperary and Limerick to Cork. All responses are anonymous and the survey should take no longer than 10 mins to complete. The information you provide will be analyzed to determine whether there is sufficient demand to introduce an early morning service from Thurles/Limerick to Cork. The data you provide will be held securely by Survey Monkey and will be protected under their terms of use. The data will be used to provide a report to the RU director and his team as well as to GCU/IRO on my findings.

If you would like more information before you decide about taking part, please email Stephen Hackett HERE

Climate Conversation- Climate Action Plan 2021
Responding as an individual citizen

The Irish Government is now developing the 2021 Climate Action Plan and want your views on how to transform Ireland and support people to take their own climate actions. You are invited to be part of this Climate Conversation and to share your views on the government's climate action and how it can support you to take climate action in your own life.

Your views will also be part of the wider National Dialogue on Climate Action and will help to engage and communicate with more people on Ireland's climate action in the future.

The Climate Action Plan is Ireland’s roadmap to becoming a climate neutral economy and resilient society by 2050. This means that the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere is dramatically reduced and is balanced by the amount removed by our land, forestry, or technology. Becoming a climate resilient society will help us to cope with the impacts of a changing climate.

Climate Conversation- Climate Action Plan 2021
Responding as an organisation

The Government has decided to prepare the next Climate Action Plan, which will set out actions that must be taken in order to ensure we deliver on the commitments in the Programme for Government, including making sure we achieve our 2030 targets, prepare for climate neutrality no later than 2050, and make Ireland a leader in responding to climate change

As part of this consultation you are invited to consider the cross-sectoral and sectoral implications of the overall increase in climate ambition set out above, and to set out proposals for additional policies and measures across sectoral areas, including estimations of the associated greenhouse gas emissions reductions and/or increased resilience to the locked-in climate change impacts

The next ten years are critical if we are to address the climate and biodiversity crisis which threatens our safe future on this planet. The Programme for Government commits to an average 7% per annum reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions from 2021 to 2030 (a 51% reduction over the decade), and to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

This will be challenging and will require fundamental changes in so many parts of Irish life. In rising to the challenge, we will be able to improve the health, welfare and security of all our people. The Government has decided to prepare the next Climate Action Plan, which will set out actions that must be taken in order to ensure we deliver on the commitments in the Programme for Government, including making sure we achieve our 2030 targets, prepare for climate neutrality no later than 2050, and make Ireland a leader in responding to climate change.

As with the Climate Action Plan 2019, the new plan will have a strong focus on implementation, including actions with specific timelines and steps needed to achieve each action, assigning clear lines of responsibility for delivery. It will be informed by successful approaches in other countries, where such approaches could be adapted for implementation in Ireland.

As part of this consultation you are invited to consider the cross-sectoral and sectoral implications of the overall increase in climate ambition set out above, and to set out proposals for additional policies and measures across sectoral areas, including estimations of the associated greenhouse gas emissions reductions and/or increased resilience to the locked-in climate change impacts. Deadline for submissions is the 18 May. For more information click HERE Cork Chamber will be developing a response on the relevant aspects of this consultation, and you are invited to share your comments no later than May 7 for consideration as part of the Cork Chamber submission.
