Welcome News For Corks’ Economic Development
 

Cork Chamber has strongly welcomed the recent announcement by Minister Alan Kelly TD, to appoint a statutory committee to review the Cork City boundary and examine whether the local authority structures should be merged.


Cork Chamber believes that a unitary authority for the Cork region would accrue many potential benefits. In particular, significant savings could arise by eliminating the duplication of resources by combining many aspects of local authority activity which in turn could lead to a reduction in rates for business located in Cork. In addition, it is important that Cork speaks with one voice in order to maximise economic investment and having a single local authority for the entire County could be the catalyst for a more streamlined approach to economic development. Cork Chamber looks forward to engaging with the newly established statutory committee charged with reporting on their deliberations within the next nine months.





Positive start to 2015 for the Cork Economy
 

Cork Chamber is delighted to welcome 100 new jobs for Cork.  These jobs will be created by US Company ABEC Inc. who are to expand their global operations in Fermoy. This  job announcement comes fast on the back of a number of recent positive developments for Cork including the recent sale of the Capitol Cinema Site, the progression of the Pairc Ui Chaoimh redevelopment and the new Events Centre to be located at the Bemish and Crawford site and finally, the commencement of construction on the One Albert Quay project.

When completed, these projects will significantly enhance the already facilitative business environment that exists in Cork.  



Survey Prize Winner
 
Cork Chamber would like to congratulate Gary Duffy, Excelsys Technologies on winning a One Night Luxury Stay for Two at Cork's premier five star hotel, Hayfield Manor, for completing our Q4 Economic Trends Survey. Many thanks to all those who completed this quarter’s economic survey. 

Your input is greatly appreciated and highlighted a number of positive trends around confidence levels, turnover, net profits and employment. However, the survey findings also highlighted a number of factors that businesses believe pose a threat to growth and require careful monitoring to reduce any associated risks. The top three threats to business growth reported by respondents related to cost competitiveness, taxation levels and over-regulation. The Chamber will continue to communicate the importance of these issues to relevant policy and financial bodies.

Effective Presentation Skills

This course combines the perfect balance of theory with practical presentation techniques over one day resulting in a comprehensive training course giving participants the skills required to deliver effective presentations in a clear, concise and confident manner. Participants will learn how to structure a presentation to gain maximum effect and impact, control their nerves and convey a professional image through the presentation.

Participants will practice and deliver their presentation a number of times throughout the day. One of these sessions is recorded and feedback will be offered.

Following this course, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of knowing your audience
  • Plan an effective presentation
  • Overcome Nerves
  • Beginning and ending a presentation successfully
  • Be familiar with a strong presentation structure
  • Getting the audience’s attention and keeping it
  • Establishing the audience's attention and keeping it

This course is aimed at those who would like to gain confidence when designing and delivering a presentation and would like to learn a process that can be applied for all future presentations.

Participants should come to the course with a Presentation topic in mind. When choosing your topic, bear in mind that initially you will build your presentation around your chosen topic and deliver it at the end of the day. MS Excel (Intermediate) - 2007/2010

This course is designed for those who may have been using MS Excel 2007 or 2010 for some time, but have never received formal training. We will work through basics including the use of shortcut keys & some less familiar formatting options. We will then move on to more intermediate topics such as working with and linking multiple worksheets, creating charts, managing lists (Sorting & AutoFilter) among other options.

Objectives:

On completion of this course participants will be able to use much of the functionality with MS Excel including:

• Competent use of Shortcut Keys

• Use formatting tools such as the format painter

• Write and copy formulas – Relative / Absolute

• Work with multiple worksheets and write formulas across sheets / Link Sheets

• Create professional looking charts and use drawing tools to enhance these

• Use the database functionality of MS Excel – Sorting & Auto Filter

 

Personal Productivity using MS Outlook 2007/2010

The emphasis of the day is the practical application of the 'Time Management Best Practice' theory using MS Outlook as the tool. This course has been designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies to effectively use Outlook as your organisational tool.

  • Be aware of Time Management theory (Best Practice)

The event is focused on the European marine sector and in particular, will focus on shipbuilding, equipment, renewable marine energy and repairs. The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) partner at Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Région Paris Ile-de-France is organising a B2B matchmaking seesion at this event. 


B2B Matchmaking Event, Anuga FoodTec, Cologne, 26th-27th March

This event is at the forefront of food industry, namely for areas of food processing; food packaging; food safety; food ingredients; and services and solutions. The EEN partner, Zenit Zentrum für Innovation und Technik in Nordrhein-Westfalen GmbH, is organising workshops and B2B meetings at this event.  

 

B2B Matchmaking Event, Hannover Messe, Hannover, 14th-16th April

Hannover Messe 2015 is the world’s leading fair in industrial technology.  EEN partner, Investitions und Forderbank Niedersachsen (NBANK), is organising a B2B matchmaking event and aims to offer SMEs and research organisations the opportunity to find and meet partners for commercial agreements and for research and technology cooperation.

B2B Matchmaking at Euromaritime, Paris, 3rd - 4th February 

Euromaritime is a show which focuses on the European Maritime Sector and it will take place in Paris’ Porte de Versailles Centre, 3th-5th February. The event will comprise of 80 exhibitors, over 5,000 visitors, and 140 key speakers between the conference and workshop elements. The event will specifically focus on shipbuilding, equipment, repairs and renewable energy.

In line with this event, the Enterprise Europe Network partner at the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Région Paris Ile-de-France, is organising a B2B matchmaking event which will take place 3-4 February. This B2B event will bring together innovative companies from maritime sector from across the world. For those seeking overseas partners, 25 minute one-to-one meetings will be offered to participants. Registered participants will be able to request business meetings with other participants. However meeting requests must be confirmed by both sides in order to be scheduled. B2B Matchmaking Event, Anuga FoodTec, Cologne, 26th - 27th March

Anuga FoodTec is a key event for the food and drink industry and covers all aspects of food production, covering everything from machines or systems; packaging material and analytics; ingredients and services. This year’s edition will take place 24-27 March. The key theme of Anuga FoodTec 2015 is resource efficiency and exhibitors will demonstrate to small food producers and service providers how energy, water and food resources can be reduced during the production process. The main topics of focus at this event will be: water and energy efficiency in food production, efficient raw material sourcing, effective processing, food chains and green certification.

The Enterprise Europe Network partner, Zenit Zentrum für Innovation und Technik in Nordrhein-Westfalen GmbH, is organising an exhibition and B2B matchmaking event which will take place at Anuga FoodTec, 26-27 March. B2B Matchmaking Event, Hannover Messe, Hannover, 14th-16th April

Hannover Messe is the world’s leading trade fair for Industrial Technology and this year’s edition takes place 13th-17th April. The event’s focus will be on industrial automation & IT, energy & environmental engineering, power transmission and control, industrial subcontracting & production engineering, and R&D.

The Enterprise Europe Network partner, Chambre de Commerce Luxembourg, is organising a B2B matchmaking event which will take place 14th-15th April. Participation in the matchmaking element of Hannover Messe is free of charge for companies that register via the Enterprise Europe Network before 13 February. In the case of no-shows at the matchmaking event, a fine of €150 will be incurred.

The Cork Association for Autism will be holding their Light it up Blue Gala Ball at the Maryborough Hotel and Spa, Douglas, Cork on Friday March 27th. The Cork Association for Autism has evolved into a service of excellence for adults with autism and asperger syndrome and has improved the quality of lives of many adults with autism and their families.This black-tie affair is one of the organisations main fundraisers in the year and all funds raised will go towards their ‘Building for the Future’ Project.


Tickets for this great event cost €75 which will include a drinks reception, beautiful four course meal, entertainment from the Kieran Kramer band and a DJ until 2am.  Companies are being encouraged to get a group together and have a work night out with tables of 10 or 12 available. Tickets would also make a great gift...don't forget Mothers Day takes place on March 15th this year.

 

The gala ball will kickstart a week of activities including Light it up Blue Day in Cork City where buildings light up blue on April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day to raise awareness of autism in Cork. Support from the public and corporates during this week is vital in order for the CAA to continue to develop their services.
