If Cork is to succeed, Government and business will need to work harder and in a more collegiate manner to deliver on commitments. We need to push a strong inclusive and sustainable agenda for the City region. Apartment living in the City must be enabled by Government or a generational opportunity to redefine our urban areas will slip through our hands. The Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy must continue to march ahead, and we must raise our ambition for renewable energy. These are pillars of activity that will move the business environment into a fresh and highly competitive space, as we seek to differentiate Cork’s approach to the pandemic years. As we move beyond the pandemic the UN Sustainable Development Goals will remain a guiding compass offering a positive and competitive future direction for Cork. SUSTAINABLE CORK FUND - IMPACT REPORT LAUNCHED Cork Chamber and Rethink Ireland recently launched an Impact Report highlighting the positive results and outcomes linked to the Sustainable Cork Fund.

The Fund was developed in 2019 with the goal of increasing the resilience of Cork communities and creating a positive legacy in the region through collective action. €100,000 was raised by Cork Chamber and the local business community, which was then matched by the Department of Rural and Community Development via the Dormant Accounts Fund. Little did the donors know at the time what was in store in the year ahead, and just how critical community resilience would be. The total fund of €200,000 was allocated to three projects working across diverse social causes but which share a common vision of making Cork city and county more sustainable, both socially and environmentally. From education and training supports for migrant women and people undergoing addiction treatment, to reducing the environmental waste of single-use plastics, all three awardees are playing a role in tackling issues that will make our communities more

resilient. The three awardees, Nasc, NCE Outreach, and Refill Ireland, received cash grants and non-financial supports to the value of €50,000. Together the organisations reached 125 participants and delivered 918 workshops while the Sustainable Cork Fund itself directly supported 5 jobs in these organisations. Paula Cogan, Chamber President commenting onthe report said: “This fundraising initiative demonstrates that people are keen to take action for the betterment of our communities. Social innovation initiatives have the power to promote social cohesion and build more resilient communities, and we are delighted with the support that our fund received from businesses and individuals, whose donations all contributed to advancing this vision.” “The winning projects have already had an important impact on our community, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to grow and

prosper in the future. Their work demonstrates how commitment, creativity and collective action can make Cork more resilient and a better place to live and work.” Business Development and Political Engagement Manager at Rethink Ireland, Pádraic Vallely commenting on the outcomes: “It has been phenomenal to see what these three awardee organisations - Nasc, NCE Outreach, and Refill Ireland have achieved in less than a year given the right supports and much-needed funding. Gas Networks Ireland releases third sustainability report - Exceeds sustainability targets during pandemic Entitled ‘Sustainability in Action’ and aligned to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard, Gas Networks Ireland’s third annual sustainability report highlights the ongoing progress made by the national gas network operator in supporting environmental, social and economic sustainability within both its own business and the communities in which it operates. Despite the limitations faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gas Networks Ireland exceeded all its sustainability targets in 2020, including exceeding the national Public Sector Energy Efficiency Target by 14% last year.

Exceeding targets

Gas Networks Ireland exceeded the national Public Sector Energy Efficiency Target by 14% last year, delivering a 47% energy improvement across its offices and fleet. One of only 40 companies in Ireland to hold a Business Working Responsibly Mark, Gas Networks Ireland was also recognised as “taking coordinated action on climate issues” and achieved a ‘B-‘ in the Carbon Disclosure Platform (CDP) global emissions ratings, exceeding the global, European and sector averages to finish in the top quartile of all businesses assessed globally.

Decarbonising the gas network The semi-state utility advanced its journey to a decarbonised gas network with approval from Cork County Council and An Bord Pleanála for Ireland’s second renewable gas injection facility in Mitchelstown, the opening of its second public compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling station in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, and the development of two more stations in Clonshaugh, Co. Dublin, and on the Ballysimon Road in Limerick, which are now both in operation.

Supporting biodiversity

The organisation continued to support the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, joined leading companies around the world in signing up to the Business for Nature Call to Action, and was recognised with the Sustainable Energy Achievement and Large Green Organisation awards at the 2020 Green Awards.

In June, Gas Networks Ireland was named Green Business of the Year 2021, and for the second year running the national utility also won the Green Large Organisation of the Year at the Green Awards.

Volunteering in the community Gas Networks Ireland supported 33 community projects, providing over €250,000 and 586 employee volunteer hours to local communities, including celebrating 10 years in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI) by taking the popular Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programme, Energize, online to meet the needs of new virtual classrooms.

Putting safety first

The organisation introduced a number of new initiatives to support the health and wellbeing of its employees and the general public, winning the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year award for its ‘HazCon’ app, which allows staff and contractors to report potential safety issues, and the 2020 Esri Ireland Sharing & Collaboration Customer Success award for its online ‘Dial Before You Dig’ platform, providing information about the gas network and location of underground gas pipes.

Being a first

Gas Networks Ireland achieved integrated recertification of five management systems to ISO standards from the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) – a first of its kind, not only for the organisation, for both Ireland and the NSAI.

We are ever mindful of our sustainability responsibilities and aim to contribute to the protection of the environment while supporting the social and economic development of the communities in which we operate. We are proud of our achievements in 2020 and committed to ensuring that sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do. As a leading utility, sustainability is defined by our role in delivering an affordable and clean energy future for the people of Ireland through the decarbonisation of the gas network and the reduction of emissions across all sectors of the Irish economy. We were incredibly proud to be recognised with two Green Awards in 2020 and for taking coordinated action on climate issues through the Carbon Disclosure Platform. I wish to acknowledge the ongoing hard work and dedication of the Gas Networks Ireland team in continuing to deliver on our sustainability initiatives throughout 2020. TACKLING FOOD WASTE Authored by Placement Student, Alannah O’Callaghan, MSc Co-operatives, Agri-Food and Sustainable Development at UCC’s Centre for Co-operative Studies As part of the Sustainable Cork Programme, Cork Chamber has committed to furthering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

How can my organisation be more proactive in reducing the amount of food waste we create?

Reducing food waste is one practical way that the business community can support the SDGs and contribute to a better and more sustainable world. To gain further insight on food waste practice in officebased environments in Cork, we conducted a sample survey of 25 businesses and a round of in-depth interviews alongside extensive policy and best practice research.

To start, think of all the ways you minimise food waste at home, and continue this momentum within the office. Reducing food waste is as easy as thinking about waste when your ordering food for events, conferences and only order the amount you actually need. When creating menus at work, try and use all parts of the food and get creative with your menu, use up the extra food in a new dish the following day. While donating food waste is only a short-term solution, it is still better than throwing away leftovers. Donate or ask staff to if they want to take them home.

Food Waste Many workplaces in Ireland still dispose of food into their general waste! In a study carried out in 2018 it was discovered that 36% of general waste from offices in Ireland consists of food waste, and almost 5% of the recycling from offices was actually food waste. Currently, if your workspace doesn’t supply food onsite there is no legal requirement to segregate your food waste, however, doing so has both environmental and financial benefits (Stop Food Waste, 2021).

Why is it important to prevent, reduce and properly manage food waste? Globally, it’s estimated that approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted each year which releases up to 4.4 gigatones of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere (Hawken, 2017). In Ireland more than one million tonnes of food is wasted annually which accounts for up to 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent (EPA, 2021). This food waste has negative impacts on the climate, biodiversity, fresh water supply and the atmosphere, and it also undermines global targets for food security. Reducing your waste and segregating it is better for the environment, but it also benefits you financially as the weight of your general waste bin is reduced and lowers your waste bills!

What are my options for managing food waste at work? There is a certain amount of waste that is unavoidable so make sure you dispose of this correctly. Brown bins are the most commonly used solution for workspaces. They come in a range of sizes and can be provided by your waste management company. When food is disposed of in these bins it is either sent to a composting facility or an anaerobic digestion facility which is far better than winding up in landfill. Onsite composting is another environmentally friendly solution for some workplaces; however, this takes more time, commitment and some paperwork compared to the brown bin option, and due to location may not be an option for many work environments. Some businesses are not in a position do either of these things or may not create enough waste to avail of these options, so one of the simplest solutions as an individual is to take the food waste home in your lunchbox and dispose of it in your compost or brown bin at home!

The survey found that policy is not to be the primary motivator for companies. Instead a commitment to sustainability and the environment appeared to be more important. This was further supported by in-depth interviews which showed that the drive to prevent and reduce food waste within companies is typically part of a bigger initiative to become more sustainable. This demonstrates that fostering sustainable behaviour within an organisation can make real change.

Recommendations According to the IPCC, climate change is rapid, widespread and intensifying. The role of human influence on the climate system is undisputed and individuals and organisations alike have a moral obligation to take action and become more environmentally sustainable. •

Ensure that your organisation is segregating waste, and that your bin collection company provide you with bins and proper signage to do so If you haven’t already, complete a waste audit for your business. You may be surprised at how much food (and other types) of waste you create. It will also enable you to develop personalised solutions for your own organisation and save you money! Provide education and/or training for employees on how to prevent and reduce waste in the office. Develop targets or KPIs for your company to meet when it comes to reducing waste. It will give your team a way to measure and celebrate success. Set up a green team or have staff who are dedicated to implementing sustainable strategies and initiatives within your work environment. Liaise with all your contractors, from catering events to cleaning, to ensure you are all on the same page about both reducing and properly segregating your waste.

ENHANCING YOUR ENVIRONMENT Cork Chamber kicked of the autumn season of the Sustainable Cork Programme webinar series with ‘Design for Sustainability: Design Future Ways of Living’ on 24 September by looking to local examples of the New European Bauhaus concept in action. The European environmental, economic and cultural initiative launched in January 2021 seeks to combine innovative design with concrete actions tackling climate change, to make our future living spaces more sustainable, affordable and accessible. Our speakers Fiona KearneyDirector, The Glucksman; Ailbhe Cunningham- Architect & Kyrl’s Quay TEST SITE and Amy McKeogh – Architect & Design POP, demonstrated how they are changemakers actively engaged in hands on creative public engagement projects across our city. The session revealed how creative and interdisciplinary initiatives can convene space to design future ways of living, bringing together knowledge and insight from different disciplines beyond architecture and design. The audience was challenged to make a collective effort to imagine and build a future that is sustainable, inclusive and beautiful. This conversation is timely as Cork city embarks upon an exciting phase of growth and change –with sustainability, quality of life, social inclusion, and climate resilience aiming to be at the core of the recently published Cork City draft development plan.

TEST SITE TEST SITE was a collaborative, urban research project based on Kyrl’s Quay, Cork City. Co-created by Ailbhe Cunningham and Aoife Desmond, the project worked at the intersection of art, architecture and ecology. Engaging with natural and built heritage, the project used sitespecific architectural interventions, film/performance work, discursive talks and live events to respond to

a vacant ‘island’ site on Kyrl’s Quay, Cork City Centre. As part of our commitment to more sustainable urban living, Cork Chamber sponsored the Choill Bheag, a small dense, biodiverse native woodland habitat of 300 trees which was installed temporarily at TEST SITE, before each sapling is rehomed post-event.

CORK’S PLACE IN EUROPE - NEXT GENERATION EU Cork Chamber is delivering a “Communicating Europe Initiative”, supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The programme is aimed at deepening public awareness of the role the European Union plays in our daily lives and at improving the quality and accessibility of public information on European issues, particularly at regional and national level. Many of the challenges and opportunities that we face today are global and we cannot address these on our own. As such, our programme “Cork’s Place in Europe - Next Generation EU’’ seeks to engage members by offering an opportunity to have their say on

how decisions and policies are communicated at European level. Specifically, Ireland is set to receive almost €1 billion in grants from the European Union to support Ireland’s recovery and resilience plan, of which 42% will go to climate objectives and 32% to digital objectives. The plan forms part of an unprecedented coordinated EU response to the COVID-19 crisis. It should support city regions such as Cork to address challenges by embracing the green and digital transitions which will in turn, strengthen economic and social resilience and the cohesion of the Single Market.

REOPENING OF RYANAIR BASE AT CORK AIRPORT A HUGE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

Ryanair has announced a €200m investment in Cork Airport and a full recovery of its pre-pandemic passenger capacity with the reopening of the base. The investment will bring 20 routes to Cork, including the introduction of new services to Birmingham and Edinburgh. The restoration of the airline’s base from December will also secure 60 Ryanair jobs. Cork Airport and the daa have worked closely with Ryanair to extend the traffic recovery scheme to the end of October 2022 to incentivise Ryanair traffic to return to pre-pandemic levels. This €200m investment secures 60 Ryanair jobs at Cork, but more importantly restores passenger traffic at Cork to pre-pandemic levels for summer ’22.

Commenting on the announcement, Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber said: “The announcement by Ryanair that it is to reopen its base at Cork Airport is a huge vote of confidence in the region. It will help to position Cork on the road to economic recovery as the airline facilitates a great deal of business and tourism not only in Cork but throughout the entire southern region. Today’s news means that Cork Airport can begin to build on the momentum and success it was experiencing prior to the pandemic when passenger numbers were reaching record highs and the airport itself was Ireland’s fastest growing airport.” He continued: “As the country begins to emerge from the effects of COVID19, Cork Airport will once again become a key driver of the Cork economy ensuring strong regional and national connectivity. It is essential now that government continues to robustly support Cork Airport through Traffic Recovery Support Scheme and marketing funding. Cork Chamber welcomes today’s significant announcement and the anticipated level of activity it will bring to the airport.”

CORK’S DIGITAL MARKETING LEGENDS COME TO THE FORE The Cork Digital Marketing Awards 2021 were held virtually on October 1st where our category winners were announced along with the overall winner our 2021 Cork Digital Marketing Legend. The awards, presented by Sinéad Kennedy, celebrate success, and recognise the strategic, innovative, and creative approaches that businesses are bringing to all digital platforms. Over the last sixteen months digital marketing has been catapulted forward and while its importance was steadily growing for many years, the current pandemic has acted as a catalyst placing digital marketing at the core of company growth and even survival. Commenting at the awards Chamber President Paula Cogan said, “There were phases in both 2020 and 2021 where for many, online was the dominant form of communication in their lives. In this space, individuals and brands who provided regular engagement, positivity and were true to themselves and their brand thrived and found a new role, not only as product or service providers but as thought leaders... I would like to congratulate all the teams, individuals and agencies who entered and particularly those at this final stage.”

Paula Cogan also paid tribute to Natasha Lynch, Founder and MD of Essential French, to whom this year’s awards are dedicated and who sadly and untimely passed away earlier this year. “Natasha is fondly remembered by all of us at Cork Chamber and the wider digital world in Cork for her effervescence and joie de vie. We dedicate our awards tonight to a social media tour de force Natasha Lynch.” The outstanding Crawford Art Gallery were crowned our overall winners and Cork’s Digital Marketing Legend 2021, also having scooped the award for Best in Content Creation and Best Use of Instagram. On receiving the award Mary McCarthy, Director, Crawford Art Gallery commented, “We are honoured to be acknowledged by Cork Chamber as digital legends. This is a huge boost for us and our team at this time and we recognise the chamber as standard bearers. We have like so many others worked dutifully to create touch points and conversations with our audiences and stakeholders over the past 18 months. We are really delighted this has been recognised and appreciated.”

Speaking on their digital communications Ms McCarthy noted, “This engagement was a lifeline for us and our artists. Our artists collaborated with us to try and shape this engagement to be human, fun and engaging. We have now recognised the possibilities of the digital to build on the immensely rich physical experience that Crawford Art Gallery offers and believe this new digital ambition will continue to evolve and build new connections for us, the artists and the collection.” As well as the accolade of being named this year’s overall winners Crawford Art Gallery will also receive a Content Studio Package courtesy of our media partner the Irish Examiner. The Content Studio will work with the Crawford Art Gallery to bring their brand story to life across the Irish Examiner channels, reaching an extensive and engaged audience. Showcasing the Financial Services Cluster in South-West Ireland “The IFS sector has developed to a point where it is recognised as an important component of the Irish economy, and the nature, scale and complexity of activities carried out here is broader, more diverse, and more geographically spread across the country than ever before.” (Ireland for Finance Action Plan 2021 - Building on Resilience) IRELAND FOR FINANCE is the Irish Government’s strategy for the development of Ireland’s international financial services sector. The plan identifies three strategic priorities: Sustainable Finance, Diversity and Regionalisation. Annual action measures are developed with input from stakeholders and for 2021, these measures are grouped under four pillars, where stakeholder activities will focus, namely: Operating Environment; Technology and Innovation; Talent; and Communication and Promotion

“Regional locations in Ireland offer a viable alternative to Dublin for providing international financial services, whether as a primary site or as a second site that is complementary to operations in Dublin. Over a third of international financial services jobs are located in areas outside Dublin.” (Ireland for Finance Action Plan 2021 - Building on Resilience)

Ireland’s South-West region is home to a significant and growing cluster of international financial services (IFS) companies representing multiple sub-sectors of financial services (FS), with particularly strong activity in the areas of asset management, fund administration and fintech. The sector is supported by a robust enabling environment which includes a significant number of leading audit, accountancy and legal firms. The sector has grown steadily over the last 10 years and is supported by a strong talent pipeline of graduates from the two regional universities, MTU and UCC. Furthermore, the long-established ICT cluster and the growing cyber cluster in the region provide an ideal environment for complementary activities and exchange of expertise in areas that will dominate the future of the FS industry, including AI, cybersecurity and regtech. On 5th November, Cork Financial Services Forum is hosting a sector-focused event, as part of a commitment to the Ireland for Finance Action Plan 2021. The route took them through Belfast, Derry, Sligo, Galway, Limerick and Cork before finishing in the Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge, Dublin.

The countdown to the Irish Greyhound Laurels, is underway. Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) Chairman Frank Nyhan, was joined by Jimmy Barry Murphy, in his role as Chairman of “Friends of Cork Greyhound Racing” and John Linehan greyhound trainer with Runninta Seeya, Winner of the 2020 Irish Greyhound Laurels Final for the launch at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium. The final scheduled for Saturday 23rd October. Revive Paint

October is National Reuse Month, and to help us play our part, Cork County Council and Cork City Council have launched an innovative circular economy initiative called Revive Paint, which involves the production of good quality, affordable paint by two Cork based social enterprises using paint which they collect from local authority civic amenity sites. The social enterprises involved are Northside Community Enterprise (NCE) in Farranferris, Cork City and Cycle Sense based in Skibbereen. The Cork Car Show at the Cork International Hotel in association with Cork Airpiort took place at The Cork International Hotel recently. The event is a charity fundraising event and this year it raised funds in aid of Cope Foundation and Ability at Work. Rebel Spirit Awards

The everyday heroes amongst us are to be recognised by the new, Rebel Spirit Awards, organised by Corkbased financial services company MBC Financial. Designed to honour Cork people and companies that did sound things during 2020-2021 and kept us sane. There are 12 award categories for the Rebel Spirit Awards and members of the public can nominate people and companies they think should get recognition. All nominees will be considered by a panel of judges and the awards will be presented in the Metropole Hotel on November 17th, 2021.
