Reopening Cork

Dear Chamber Member,

I hope you, your family and colleagues are keeping well.

Today's announcement by Government included the welcome expansion of Phase 2, reopening of the economy and society, and a reduction from 5 phases to 4.

The full return of retail in Phase 2 will provide a boost for our high streets. We encourage those reopening to follow the Return to Work Safety Protocol, and use the HSA tools and checklists to ensure the safety of your employees and customers - click here.

The extension of The Wage Subsidy Scheme to August is welcome and will help ensure the continuity of business for the summer months. However, for certain sectors, the lifeline will be required far beyond August.

As we progress through the phases of reopening, Cork Chamber will continue to advocate on your behalf for the supports and aids needed to ensure continuity of business. Planned and scaled withdrawal of supports will be important to prevent unnecessary negative impacts on business, along with a deepening of the rates waiver to more closely mirror the eligibility criteria of The Wage Subsidy Scheme.

It is a testament to the ethics and diligence of Irish business and society that there has been sufficient progress on COVID-19 control to enable the easing of restrictions that we see today. There is no finer County to be stuck in than Cork and I encourage people to enjoy our outstanding natural beauty over the coming weeks in a responsible manner. It is clear that with this freedom, a significant battle can be won for our economy, and the return of the hospitality sector on June 29th is immensely welcome.

Take care and have a good weekend,

Conor Healy
